Default Cash for clunkers? Old CJ for new JK?

What do you think? If the government extends the Cash for Clunkers program should I turn in my old P.O.S. CJ7 on a new JK unlimited? They are giving $4500 and I know it isn't worth that.

I don't think I can do it even if it is for $4500....

I posted this in the CJ section too so if that's a no no please feel free to chew my ass for that.

The JK does not meet the qualifications for Cash for Clunkers program. It does not have a high enough average MPG.

I believe the only jeep vehicles that qualified were the patriot and the compass. If you traded a cj in on one of those you would probably get a chewing from several people considering everything that got traded in on that short lived program gets crushed.

The shame about the program is that it does more harm for the environment than good.

The only vehicles that don't qualify are the JK's (both 2 and 4 door) and the Commander. Everything else (Grand Cherokee, Liberty, Compass, Patriot) qualify. I'm not sure if it is only a NYC/NJ/CT thing but Jeep is also handing out up to an additional $4,500 for a new vehicle regardless of whether or not you have a trade in. So if you DO have a trade in you could potentially see $9,000 towards a new vehicle. If you DON'T have a trade in, you may still be able to receive $4,500.

The only downfall is the Cash for Clunkers program is pretty much exhausted as of right now. Our gov't is trying to push out some more money to keep the program running. Hope that helps

Yea of the $1 billion the government set aside it is almost all used up. Worse thing is, like said before, we are doing way more damage than we are doing good. Okay yes we are reducing carbon emissions, but we are increasing the amount of batteries we destroy. That's a harmful chemical. Plus you have brake fluid, transmission fluid, motor oil, power steering fluid, antifreeze, and not to mention all the space it is going to require to store all of these new junkyard cars.

Sure lets pollute the ground to save the skies. Once again a good intention that turned into an awful idea by stupid politicians. Thanks again Nancy Pelosi. Thanks again.

Oh yea and it won't work for your JK.

It most definately does qualify. The conditions are that what you trade in get no more than 18mpg and what you purchase needs to get at least 2mpg more than what you trade in...that gets you $3500 voucher....if you trade it in for something getting 4mpg higher then you get a $4500 voucher....So it's not as easy as some of the cars but with the right trade in it still works on the JK.

As it is currently structured, the plan would give vouchers worth $3,500 to anyone who trades in a car that has a combined EPA rating of 18 mpg or less on a new one that has a combined EPA rating of 22 mpg or more. If the old vehicle is replaced with a new one that gets at least 10 mpg more than it does, the voucher would increase to $4,500. (You can find EPA fuel economy ratings on cars back to 1985 at fueleconomy.gov.)

Trucks and SUVs are eligible for vouchers if they get no more than 18 mpg and are replaced with a vehicle that gets at least two mpg more than the old one. The voucher would increase to $4,500 if the new vehicle gets four mpg more than the old one. Other provisions apply to larger medium-duty work trucks.
This is from Congress website....

You haven't thought this out have you?

To the OP, I think it would be sacrilegious to actually scrap a CJ. They are not going to junk yards, they are scrapped, never to be seen or used as a CJ again.
