Default This is NOT another 33 vs 35 thread.....it's about 34s

Ok...I want to know how 34 inch tires perform...And searching for 34's in the forum search tool is useless and gives you any thread involving tires.

So.......I'm looking for what tires I want to purchase. I really can't afford re-gearing with 35s and really don't want to settle on 33s so I figured 34's might be better.

Goodyear duratracs comes in 315-70-17 which measures to 34.4....Do you guys think I will lose less power going with these over a full 35?

UGGGGHH...Perfect tires where are you?????

There are few, if any, "full 35s". They usually measure a few tenths under 35. If you're worried about gearing, less than an inch of difference in diameter isnt going to make a difference. Get the 35's, you wont regret it.

What gears do you have?

4.10s and you will be fine with 35's, but like he said, few are actually 35 inches.

Bottom line, they will perform better that 35s but worse than 33's.

As others said, tire sizes usually run small.

A 315/70/17 will be closer to 33" when mounted and at proper psi.

I have run that size, and yes, they do measure 33" mounted.

ahhh..it depends on the rim size. Generally there is no true '35' or '37' with even inched rims such as 16's. ..and most people on here saying they have 35's probably don't, but when it's that close we don't bother splitting hairs.

Unfortunatly I only have 3.73 on my "X"....I would love to regear but it is not in the budget for the near future as I finish school and will soon be moving. So those have priority over gears. But I need new tires as well and I want to move up in size. I had originally decided on 33's but now I'm fairly certain I will be going with the 34.4 Goodyear Duratracs for the decent pricing and I've been reading that they are quiet on road and handle well off road. I'm thinking I'll be "alright" with that tire and 3.73 gears until I'm ready to regear.

Anyone else have a convincing argument against my reasoning and tell my why I shouldn't get this setup and why I should step down to a 33in tire.

Also....Any other 34 inch tires for a 17in wheel out there....I've only seen a few....Pictures always a plus.

x2

i run those now I love them, but i do have 4:10's and a SUPERCHIPS So I may not be the guy to ask, however I will say I am running Maxxis Bighorns and the wear has been great in fact to damn great they have seen all types of terain including 60miles of freeway a day mon-fri. I am at about 30k miles and they are just about half way. These things are wearing as good as my Yoko geolander AT's on my old ZJ I got 55k miles out of those and had 25% left.

One thing I do not like about them is a relatively thin sidewall I think only 2ply. I have some big gouges out of them.

But the price was awsome, i think i paid 185 or 190 a tire as apposed to 250 and up for a 35 in the other brands.

I am running a 33x12.50x15 GY Duratracs with an Auto and 3.73s. I previously ran stock Bridgestones that measure 32" actual. These GYs measure 32.25" actual.....so you would think the extra .25" wouldn't hurt my power......wrong answer. My new wheels and tires weigh LESS than my stock ones did......but the weight is much more towards the outer part of the tire due to 2 things - 1) the aggressive lug pattern and 2) the WIDTH of this new tire. This causes more rotational mass, which means more HP required to turn the tires. I am now searching for gears at 65+ on the freeway where I wasn't before and my mpg took a 1 to 1.5 mile hit. That said, I love these tires and wheels and wouldn't change them.

I learned through this what I think others may not be understanding.....its not just the height that changes the HP requirement, but the width and tread pattern does as well. I only went up a QUARTER of an inch.....and you know the rest.

So, the Flashpaq will be here Monday......Thanks Bruised!
