Default 4.88 or 5.13 w/ 33"s (plans to go to 35")

So, the need and money has come through to regear (and get new drive shaft installed for free in the process). Currently, I only have 33" KM2's, but I do have eventual goals to go to 35"s, but just cant swing them yet (10month old 33"s)... I already feel the need to regear with 33's, so i can foresee 100% needing bigger gears with 35"s... Do i just do 5.13's now, and be overgeared with 33"s till i get new rubber, or just go 4.88 and be happy with 33"s, and be better than stock when I do go 35"s (but still undergeared)?

Daily Driver 4dr Rubi... 18miles each way, all highway 55-65MPH. What RPM can i expect at 60mph and 70mph with 5.13 abd 33"s? 4LO still work well with that big of gears... It already reves up in 4Low 1st gear cause of the 4:1 transfer case....

Some help would be great...

I have a 6-speed, and went to 4:88's with 35's, and it worked out fine, except natually the gas consumption. I don't have the power I thought I would when pulling a small (4X5) trailer, but the JK runs fine. I am running around 2900 to 3000 at 70 mph.
I actually like the performance I had with the 32's.

I have an Unlimited with 35s and 4.88s.

I know the general concensus seems to be to go to 5.13 with 35s. However, I wanted to keep the gear ratio relatively close to stock for milage and wear and tear. 4.88s and 35s are a combo that is lower geared than the stock tires and 4.10s. I'm on the right side of the power curve....

In real life, my Jeep seems to do fine with this combo, and I still see reasonable gas milage. I figure most of my miles are going to be on pavement, so I wanted something that works well both on and off.

With the 4:1 transfer-case we have in the Rubicon and the torque multiplier effect of the auto trans, there is plenty of torque for the trail when it's needed.

No matter what we do to these rigs, there's always a trade-off. I'm lower geared than stock, but I kept it reasonably close. I'm happy with the decision--it works well.

Good luck with your upgrades!

-Randy

You have a 4dr AND an auto.

It sounds like you should be debating 5.13's and 5.38's with a rubi....

From everything i've read, you will regret 4.88's with your setup.

I plan on getting 4.88's, but I have a 2dr X w/ a 6-speed. I was pondering 5.13's, but I want to be able to drive on the highway with fairly low rpm's.

Yes, 4dr and Auto... Dont get me wrong, I 100% would go 5.13's if I had the 35"s now or in the real close future, but I will have these 33"s probably till they wear out and then I dont know, could be a year, could be 3. So i need to plan on what i have for awhile and thats why i am asking... 33"s and 5.13 for a year or two? I dont know what kind of RPMs I would see on the highway, but I imagine they could be pretty high

I can see where you're coming from, but would you rather put up with a little higher rpm's until you get the 35's or doing a regear twice? I've heard people say they love the 5.13's on 33's.

If you search, you will find a LOT more people that wished they went 5.13's instead of 4.88's and people w/ 5.13's wishing they went 5.38's. Not too many people regret gearing too low from what I can gather.

My suggestion would be to find someone in your area with a similar setup and check it out. Also, if you plan to get it pro. installed, call that place up and ask if any of their previous customers would be willing to let you check there's out. Just an idea!

The only person i know that has regeared has 4.88 and 33"s, and likes it, but says it does downshift some on Big hills, and his gas MPG has flucated each time after filling up (18, to 14, to 12, back to 16)... Havent gotten to drive it yet, but hope to soon.. I had a feeling just go ahead and putting 5.13 in now would be best bet.

4.88's for a DD is what I would do in your case. Especially if 35's are way down the line.

Does anyone know what RPMs I will be running at with 33"s and 5.13 gears? I dont remember that link to the calculator, but real world usage would be even better..
