A bunch of folks have been wanting to check out the area around Carrizo Gorge for a while, so we're going to make it happen. More details soon, but the plan is to arrive at the camping area on Friday evening, probably split into two groups Saturday, one to go wheeling and the other to go hiking to Carrizo Gorge. Sunday morning maybe a stop by the mud caves or an easy run through Oriflamme Canyon.
Here's where we'll be camping: http://goo.gl/maps/QZOYu I'll post complete driving directions soon. The campsite will accommodate both tents and RVs. It's just a treeline in the desert, so no hook-ups and no services.
This is our hiking destination: Carrizo Gorge Railway
The hike from where we'll park our Jeeps is around 3 miles each way, so if you've got bad knees or something maybe go wheeling instead. Or, you could volunteer to sit in the shade by the hikers' Jeeps and sip cold beverages while we're gone so no, er, pedestrian traffic thinks about messing with our rigs.
The prime destination for this hike is the area of Goat Canyon Trestle. The trestle is undoubtedly private property, so I'm not saying we'll get near it. I'm not saying anything. But check out the history of the Carrizo Gorge Railway. There's a reason why it's been called the Impossible Railway and why there are abandoned rail cars alongside the tracks.
If you're not feeling the hiking vibe, there'll most likely be a run to Carrizo Marsh, Canyon sin Nombre, or one of the other striking arroyos in the area. If there's interest, maybe all the way out to Diablo Drop-Off and on to Sandstone Canyon. Like I said, more information will follow.
If you can't make it on Friday but would like to join in on the fun Saturday please be at the campsite by 9am so we can hit the trail on time.
So, pencil in the dates and check back for more info. Thanks!

Hey Bill! Count me in for this, it's a place I've needed to explore and it's no better than with our JK gang!! It's also a bonus that we'll have some Phantom quad-copters to check out flying and capturing video... :-)

By the way, I intend to camp out with the motorhome with JK in tow, probably plan on hiking to the trestle, and will have "TomSliksChik" (Lynn) too.

Some of the cool things we'll see out there....
water tower
Badlands overlook before the drop into canyon sin nombre
mud caves
Hollywood and Vine (when it was still there!)
Train Track that ran up until the 80's
It's possible alien visitors where there at one point in time!
Sunsets and evenings are awesome in this part of the desert!
Might even get luck and see some Big Horn Sheep along the way!

I can already tell this is shaping up to be a great trip!
As Tom alluded to, we'll have two or three quad-copters on this trip taking photos and video of our shenanigans and of Goat Canyon Trestle. So, look up and say "cheese"!
