Monache Meadows & Sherman Pass Overnight camping trip July 23 - July 25, 2010
Monache Meadows & Sherman Pass camping trip 7/23-7/25
If you are interested in joining us we are doing an overnight camping run at Monache Meadows & Sherman Pass July 23rd & 24th heading home on Sunday 25th. It’s my understanding that Monache Meadows is beautiful, relaxing and extremely remote, you get to camp right next to the South Fork Kern River and if you're into fishing, the waters are abundant with German Brown and Golden/Rainbow Trout. It is also my understanding that the Sherman Pass tail is narrow, rocky, steep, and difficult terrain.
Please be advised that this is a BACK COUNTRY CAMPING and no reservations are taken for the campsite. In other words, the site spots are first come, first served and there are NO toilets and NO running water.

THE PLAN:
By popular demand this trip has changed to a Friday & Saturday night camping trip. The campsite will be the meeting place. We are also going to limit the number of rigs to 10 because of the size that the campsite can accommodate. If you plan on leaving early Friday perhaps you could post a meeting place among you so others have the option of joining in. It would be nice to meet up somewhere before heading up the mountain. Ryan and I are leaving on Friday around 7:30PM so if anyone would like to head out with us please PM. Saturday we can wheel Sherman Pass and Sunday relax at the campsite maybe do some more fishing before heading home. In addition, on Sunday a few people are going to do some river rafting please post if you are interested.

You can travel in from the east side up 395, the Nine Mile Road, Kennedy Meadows and to the Ranger Station. Be sure to stop in and get your Campfire Permit.
Go north from here about 3 ½ miles and take the Monache Jeep Road turnoff to your right. This will be paved for a while. Soon you come to a gate. Be sure to close it securely behind you. Shortly there after you'll arrive at a couple large areas for horse trailers, motor homes and trailers of all sizes. Make your turn down the mountain to your left. There is only one steep section of the trail. Follow this out all the way to where you can see Monache Peak on your left and the meadow lies before you. Many established campsites near here. But there are nicer ones to come. As you approach the South Fork of the Kern, be sure to stay left bypassing the river crossing to the right. Follow this road all the way out to Bake Oven. Just before you drive up into this dry desolate area you will see a trail off to your right heading up into the trees. These are the river campsites. Take this north as far as you can go. Pay close attention to all the different campgrounds here as you navigate northward. The best ones are on the right, before you cross the river. There are also campsites on the other side of the river with an outside toilet. We can use our campsite as the staging area for Sherman Pass.

Camp at the sites just to the right of the river crossing, before you actually cross. There are two huge sites right along the river right there.
Regarding food & water, please pack your own and enough for you and your passengers. Fires are allowed so please bring wood as we will be wanting it at night.

It’s cool up there. Put me down as a maybe. I have to talk my wife in to it because we are going to the Owens Valley to go Jeeping for the first ten days of July. She might be Jeeped out after that.
I have been wanting to do Monache Meadows for some time now, are you meeting up there on Saturday morning and doing just one night of camping? If anyone is interested going up on Friday I would also be in for that.
I was talking to wayoflife today and found out that he is doing a group run for this area on Labor day weekend. I'm not sure if it will be one or two nights but I think it was two in the past.
