Project-JK Central Coast Topless Tour & Wine Tasting Trip 2011: August 18th - 21st

Looking for an adventure this summer? A reason to get out and enjoy the sun, explore new places and maybe indulge yourself a bit? If so, be sure to come join us this August as we do an epic 600+ mile road trip up the beautiful central coast, more than half of which will be on the trail or on rural back-roads and byways AND, do all of it doorless and topless!! Yup, you heard right and that'll be the kicker. This trip is intended for the true Jeeper at heart, one who's willing to brave a weekend of dust, suffer through searing heat, numbing cold and, do it with a smile. Along the way, you'll get to see rolling hills of gold, stand along the rugged shores of the central coast, visit fascinating geological wonders and historical sites and of course, sample some of the finest wines made on the planet.
TENTATIVE ITINERARY
We're still hammering out the details on this summer fun run but, we thought we'd get it out there so you can at least get a taste of what we have in mind and start planning for it. While this is a topless & doorless run, we will be allowing people to wear bikini tops or screen tops but, for only part of the trip and, we will NOT allow soft tops that are just folded down. Anyway, here's what we've got planned:
THURSDAY: We will be meeting at 8:30 AM at the truck plaza on Wheeler Ridge Rd. (just off the 5 FWY and close to where the 99 splits off). From there, we will head up to Taft, cross over the Carrizo Plains, stop for some lunch at the Pozo Saloon, work our way down to the coast, stop over at a few San Luis Obispo wineries and then have dinner at their famous Farmers Market. We will be staying the night at the San Luis Obispo Downtown Travelodge which is within walking distance from the Farmers Market but, you are welcome to stay anywhere you want.

FRIDAY: We will be meeting for breakfast at 8:00 AM at:
Breakfast Buzz
295 Santa Rosa St
San Luis Obispo, CA 93405
After breakfast, we will head north on the 101 for just a bit and then cut across on back roads as we work our way up to the old Klau mining district. Along the way, we will visit the old haunted Adelaida Cemetery and stop over at some wonderful Paso Robles wineries (be sure to pack a picnic lunch as we will eat at one of the wineries). From there, we will continue to head north on a historical route up past Lake Naciemento and then end our day at Fort Hunter-Liggett where we will have some drinks at the historical Hacienda Hotel. For those of you who don't know, The Hacienda is an old country house that was designed by Julia Morgan for William Randolf Hearst and it is where we plan on staying for the night. Unfortunately, there are only a few suites with private bathrooms but, there are quite a few "cowboy rooms" which share a common bathroom. If all the rooms book up or you prefer to stay in a room with a private bathroom, there is lodging available at the Gibb Hall next door but, you cannot make reservations for it until August. In any case, you cannot make online reservations at either of these hotels so you will need to call it in. Lodging can also be found in nearby King City.

Either way, it'll be everyman and woman for themself here and will be meeting at 8:30 AM at the old Mission San Antonio de padua which is just a bit west of The Hacienda. After spending some time here, we will continue heading west taking back-roads and byways until we get down to the coast and then we'll work our way south on PCH. Once we get to San Simion, we will make a stop over at Hearst Castle, do a tour there and then continue to head south to Buellton. Along the way, we will try to visit some Santa Barbara wineries, do a picnic lunch again at one of them and then, after checking in to our hotel, do dinner at AJ Spurs. We will booking a room over at the Days Inn in Buellton and if you would like to join us, reservation information is listed below.

RULES OF THE RUN
Anyone is free to join us for all or part of the run. Please note that the wineries selected are ones that are relatively along our route and either sounded good or are ones that we have visited in the past and liked. If you have a favorite winery that you hope to visit, please let me know and we'll see if we can fit it into the schedule. To be fair, the only rules to this trip (if you can call it that) is that you must go doorless and topless or, you cannot have anything more than a bikini top and for only parts of the trip. As you can see, all our stops will be at hotels so you will have a chance to get cleaned up each day. So you know, we tried our best to pick hotels that were in the area we needed to be and ones that were relatively affordable. It is not required that you stay in the same hotel as us or even dine with us but we will require that you meet up each day at the designated point and on time. I will post up more details and information as they become available. Please let me know if you have any questions.
