2011 Automatic transmission maintenance

Dear All,

I have some questions related to the maintenance of automatic transmission for JK Sahara 2011: how can I check, at what interval and how can I change the fluid? I ask those questions because on the car there is no dipstick and the hole is sealed, so I cannot check or add fluid in the usual way. I have to mention that is on a “European” JK with 2.8 CRD engine. When asked the dealership about it the answer was that it can be done only at the dealer and I don’t know how is working in US but here this is the last option that you want to consider…. (overpriced, time consuming and so on).

Thanks,

Daniel

Unless you have reason not to, you can follow the maintenance interval schedule in the owner's manual.
Do you know which transmission you have? Is it the W5A580?

Many newer automatic transmissions don't have a dipstick but usually the filler tube is just capped, not permanently sealed. Have you tried to remove the cap?

You can get a dipstick gauge like Miller Specialty Tools 9336-A or make one yourself.

The warning about only doing it at the dealer may be because the fluid level is very temperature sensitive and dealers actually hook up to the ScanGauge to read the temp.

Further thoughts...

If your trans is "lifetime" or "no service", Mercedes Benz has modified that to as frequently as 40,000 mile intervals.

The filler tube probably had a lock-clip or lock pin that you break and replace when servicing.

Check out Mercedes specific forums for a better idea.

Thanks for advice...

The cap is blocked in the position and I didn't force it out (it doesn't move if apply "normal" force). Also I've seen a small nib on the filler tube which may block it (like an inch below the plastic cap). I will try to post a picture if necessary... I was afraid not to broke it and have small bits falling inside...

I found this video, it briefly shows the cap at 9:45.
