Default 2012 Jeep Wrangler Sport 3.6l oil filter collapsed?

Hi,

I’ve tried searching for an answer to my concern on Google and the board here, but I can’t seem to find exactly the same scenario I’ve experienced with my JK.

I had my change oil indicator come on Wednesday of last week and was able to change my oil on Monday night. I’ve done all but two of my oil changes since I’ve bought the vehicle new in 2012. I currently have around 82,100 miles and the last oil change was completed around 79,500. I used Mobil 1 full synthetic 5w-30 and a FRAM TG10955 as the user manual says to use a Mopar or equivalent, no model number provided.

Nothing appeared out of the ordinary and when I went to change the oil filter, I noticed it was stuck. I pulled on the cap which came off, but the filter remained on the oil pressure overflow valve stem. It took a bit of work and finess but I got it off without breaking anything. I was very surprised to see it looked like the filter had been crushed or squeezed. I’ve been searching around and I still can’t find anything that can explain what might have happened. No dummy lights have illuminated, no codes have been thrown by the computer either.

The only thing I have noticed recently is that the coolant temperature has increased anywhere from 10f-20f during normal operation. The temp has been sitting around 210f-216f. After changing the oil on Monday, I noticed the temp dropped back to the area of 196f and fluctuated by a few degrees up and down. It was rainy on Monday and not the normal 90f+ here in Central FL so I thought that could have had something to do with it. This morning on my commute to work, the change oil indicator came back on and I noticed the coolant temp raised back to to 206f by the time I arrived. It’s a 22 mile drive averaging 55mph on state highways (no interstate).

Has anyone seen this before? Should I be concerned at this point? I plan on pulling out the filter when I get home this afternoon just to make sure it hasn’t warped or anything again. I ordered a Mopar MO-744 (68079744AD) after reading less than favorable reviews of the FRAM filters, not sure if true or not but figured switching to the OEM can’t hurt. The oil cooler overflow spring and plastic pieces appear to be intact without any damage. I did not take any pictures of this unfortunately.

Pictures of the filter (I tried to attach but unable to from my tablet):

Any feedback would be appreciated. Thank you for your time in advance.

I buy mopar filters in Walmart. Sometimes many of the boxes are not factory sealed and I won't buy those. I always worry that someone switched the filter. In 2013 they made a subtle change and people have experienced problems if they try to put a 2012 filter in a 2013or vice versa. I would just confirm that the old filter you took out looks exactly like the new filter. By the way, not a big issue, but Mobil 1 is not certified to the Chrysler oil spec. I choose not to use it because I have lifetime warranty.

Thanks for the reply and the heads up about the Mobile 1 oil.

I checked and everything looks fine. I received my Mopar oil filter and replaced it last night. The coolant temp has stabilized out between 197f and 203f while driving. I’ll just keep checking ever so often. Maybe it was just a bad filter?
