2012 JKU Rubi 410's vs 373's

Which ratio should I go with? The dealer says that the 373's are standard and recommended for up to a 36" tire. I am thinking the 410's would be better. It will be on an automatic FWIW..

wcfd111 12-26-2011 08:12 AM

3.73 on a rubi? I was always under the impression they came standard with 4.10s:thinking:

4X4JK 12-26-2011 08:15 AM

Get the 4.10 unless you only drive highway flat surfaces.

revvinkevin 12-26-2011 08:18 AM

My '12 has 4.10's. It seems perfect with 35s. If you aren't gonna get bigger tires I think 3.73s would get better fuel mileage, I guess you have to figure out your future plans and go from there.

The 2012's starting coming standard with the 3.73 and you had to upgrade to the 4.10. I would recommend the 4.10 unless you plan on upgrading right off the bat.

EK's JK 12-26-2011 08:24 AM

Gonna go with 35's. Plus I already have front and rear bumpers and a 125 pound Warn power plant. I am thinking 410's. I was just looking for confirmation on my decision. Or for someone to tell me that I was a DA and the 410's weren't necessary.

revvinkevin 12-26-2011 08:28 AM

I think you're headed in the right direction. I'm very happy with my choice of 4.10s.

kik 12-26-2011 08:31 AM

Get the 4.10's.

cg07sut 12-26-2011 08:35 AM

The 2012's come standard with the 373's unless you get the max tow package that upgrades to 410's. I had the dealers search a 500 mile radius when I was buying, and couldn't find exactly what I wanted. I ended up with 321's on my sahara and plan to upgrade.

What mileage are you guys getting with the 373's and 35's versus 410's and 35's on a 2012 with an auto?

revvinkevin 12-26-2011 08:47 AM

With 4.10s, 35s and an auto I get mid 15 mpgs combined driving. I'm pretty happy with that. I only have 1300 miles on mine, it may get even better.

BLACKJKUR 12-26-2011 08:58 AM

If you plan on 35's, go 4.10's!!!! The reason I say that is this-
Original tires are 32's, divide the new tires' diameter at 35" by the oem (32"), multiply that by 3.73 (the gear ratio Jeep has standard for JK's with 32's) and you come up with dang close to 4.10! Thus, it's like compensating for bigger tires by going with deeper gears but, you haven't had to change a dang thing! To me, that just makes good sense!

This is not a direct comparison since mine's an '11 but, mine is completely livable with 35's and 4.10's but I can tell it'd be HORRIBLE if I had 3.73's!!! (it's no speed demon either way, LOL!)

EK's JK 12-26-2011 09:22 AM

That's it, I'm sold. 410's it is!!

Ryan0260 12-26-2011 09:47 AM

Definitely go with the 4.10's

WY-JK10 12-28-2011 04:52 PM

Am debating on 373 or 410 gearing on 2012 JKU Rubi I'm trading my 2010 JKU Rubi in for. Will be running no larger than 33" tires, but live in high altitude WY with not much flat driving. Off road doubt if it would make any difference either way with the new motor & trans, especially with the added reduction of the Rubicon 4 Lo, but at 70 mph I wonder if the difference in rpm would be enough to make the 373 a better choice. Knowing just what the rpm is at 70 mph on both 373 & the 410 on the same stock tires would help me make the decision. Anyone know?

atomthompson 12-28-2011 05:40 PM

If you look under the Modified Tech FAQ thread there's a comparison chart for the gears vs tire size ratio with respect to rpm at 70mph. And I believe it's been updated with a separate chart for the 2012 motor.

Now in my opinion I have the 373's and wish I had the 410's. Even with stock 32's I have to down shift for moderate inclines.

WY-JK10 12-28-2011 07:00 PM

Thanks for the reply. I'm also leaning toward the 410 with the 5 speed auto. Not saying a new gear, speed, rpm ratio chart has not been made for the 2012 in the Modified Tech Forum, but if it is I can't find it & have spent considerable time looking & that's the reason I asked if anyone knew what the rpm's are at 70 mph.

03fatboy 12-28-2011 07:05 PM

Dealer I bought from said they never saw a rubi w/anything but 4.10's.

Mine didn't come w/max tow package, no extra charge for 4.10's.

4.10's is the only way to have a rubi in my book no matter what.

I like to hear the muds bark once in awhile when I want them to from a dead stop

EK's JK 12-28-2011 07:10 PM

Just picked up my 2012 Rubi Unlimited tonight. Mine is bone stock for a rubi, the only option I got was automatic transmission. Mine came with 4.10's No extra charge. Most I looked at were 3.23's. I had to search a while to find it.

WY-JK10 12-28-2011 07:28 PM

Congratulations on the new Rubi. My 2010 had about all the goodies you can get stock. Didn't care for the fancy leather or navigation system. Will use a Garmin which I much prefer on the 2012 & save some big bucks. Still hoping for an answer to the rpm at 70 mph with the auto & 410 gearing. Hearing others personal satisfaction is somewhat helpful but more so to me is the actual numbers.

EK's JK 12-28-2011 07:35 PM

On the way home I was running between 70-75mph and I think I was running around 2800????? I will have to pay more attention on my way to work tomorrow.

WY-JK10 12-28-2011 08:10 PM

Much thanks. Will be looking forward to seeing the numbers tomorrow. My 2010 is 2080 at 70 mph & think about 300 hundred more would have been a lot better. New 5 speed with the OD being lower geared should create significant higher rpm with the same 410 gearing. Thinking the sweet spot should be around 2400 at 70 mph, so the reason for the request of both the 373 & 410. The 2400 at 70 perhaps is not the sweet spot, so if not why?

Canito is1 12-28-2011 08:21 PM

After 8,800 miles on my '12 Rubi Unlimited with 4.10's and a 6 speed, I have averaged 18.3mpg, living at 8,000 ft.

The gearing is a bit short in town, and on the highway the best "cruising" speed seems to be about 55 to be in the ideal place for fuel economy. That being said, at 80mph, I am just above 3k rpm which is not ideal. If I go to 35's way down the road, that will be a different story. Stock, 6 speed with 4.10's, there is more than enough power everywhere. With the gear ratios being so short, and I had to do it over, I probably would have picked up an auto, but I am very happy with my selection.

Hope this helps!

On the way to work this morning I was going 70mph on a flat highway turning 2400rpm's. I think it is the sweet spot. When I accelerated at 2400rpm's the jeep was very responsive. Like driving a stick of butter!!

lensstj 12-29-2011 05:21 AM

I am on my second 2012. On the first one it was a $50 option I thought it was the same on my current one. I have heard now that it is a free option. I am happy with the 4.10's in a currently stock 4 door and plan to keep them when I go to 35's.

As a auto 2010 guy that had to regear from 4.10 to 5.13s to get performance back after going to 35s, I'm pretty jealous it sounds like you're going to be fine running 35s with the stock 4.10s in your auto 2012! That's ~$1200 saved for you!

Thanks again. Finally found the gear-rpm charts in the Modified Tech FAQ. It was hiding in plain sight. Feel kinda dumb for it taking me so long. Anyway am surprised the 2400 you reported does not match the chart. With the 3.8 in my 2010 I get exactly what the chart says I should with 410 gears & auto trans with stock Rubi tires, 2080 rpm at 70 mph. The chart for the 3.6 says 2533 with same set up, so hope your number is the more accurate. Would be good to hear from others on this. From the chart layout it appears a true 2400 would be the sweet spot for my use just as I had thought before viewing it. 2400 to 2600 is all close enough to make the 410 the preferred gear ratio for me. It works well for my altitude use now & if I get the urge to go bigger tires in the future will still be great. Love my 2010 Rubi & I'm retired & on a slim budget, but I think this change is well worth the money. Hope to keep the 2012 the rest of my life & think this motor & trans combo is much more likely to hold up the 20 or so years I hope to have left than my 2010.

j0ew1120 12-29-2011 08:41 AM

NOt to thread jack but, the 2010 JKU Rubicons come with 3.73 then?

bbolander 12-29-2011 08:46 AM

what is standard on the 2012 rubi has been confusing, but i think its the 4:10s. early on looked at some online stickers and with max tow package with 3.73s there was a $50 extra to get 4:10s. mine didn't have the max tow and came with 4:10s, no extra, nothing extra listed in the options regarding gears. since i did't see an extra i assumed i had 3:73s until i looked on the standard side of the window sticker that says 4:10s. with the lower geared auto i would have liked the 3:73s for the better mpg, but i'm happy with the 4:10s, awesome crawler.

WY-JK10 12-29-2011 09:58 AM

Yes confusing. My dealer says the 373 is standard & the 410 comes with the max tow. Showed that too when I built my own on the jeep website. Think the reasoning is now with lower auto transmission gearing & added hp the stock jeep Rubicon for average use is better suited with 373. with stock tires the new 373 turns 200 more rpm at 70 mph than the 07-11 with 410.

Wrangle_on 12-29-2011 05:07 PM

4.10's in 07 Sahara auto

One of the options that sealed the deal on our '07 Sahara auto was 4.10 gears - and it doesn't have the tow pkg. It's my wife's DD around town and so averages 15-16 mpg. Does better on longer trips but we still have the advantage of 4.10's off road. (Running stock BFG Rubi takeoffs now)

OutlawJK 12-29-2011 05:22 PM

My 2012 auto with 4.10 was 2700 rpm @ 70 mph with the Rubicon 32" tires bone stock

Now I'm running 35" tires and leaning toward 4.56 gears which will be within 20 rpm of the factory 4.10 and 32" tires

I'm sure the 4.10 will be great for most people even with 35's but I'm

After more driving, I am finding the RPM's to be more around 2500 at 70mph. I must have had a tailwind yesterday.
