3.21 gears - not that bad?
#21
Anyone running a 295/70-17 34.4" tire on a auto JKU with the pentastar engine and 3.21 gear?
Also if you guys with 2012-2013 JKU's with an automatic can tell me your gear, tire size, and RPM's at 65mph, your info will be helpful to me so I can choose the correct combination for my ride.
Thanks!

If I towed or lived in a mountainous area I would have insisted on the 3.73 at least, but don't.
It has plenty of power and I get almost 21 on the highway at 80 and 18 in town.
Of course that assumes I can keep my foot out of it, it has great acceleration as well.
What I don't like about this set up is; the Cruise is not as close as I like it as it will loose 2-3 mph before downshifting to catch up.
Also, going slow say in a parade is tough. 3 mph is impossible without braking.
But i can live with it.......

Also, I must admit that i think post about 3.21's not being matched to the 1st gear of the six speed is crazy. 4.46 is one of the lowest first gears available and is very generous to the offroad set.

I have had my 2012 2 door with an auto and 3.21s for over a year now.. 33/12.5 were put on at 700 miles and I now have 9k on it and never looked back. I sometimes wonder what it would be like with 3.73s but this has all the power I need and more for 33s. It could work with 35s but would not be ideal and over time I would be worried about the added stress to my tranny and other components. I have no problems pulling hills at 75 mpg with cruise on. Also I have pulled a buddy's diesel out of the road as well as my dads crew cab 2500 that has been to the axles in mud. Saying theses gears suck would be incorrect. Saying you can not run 33s with them is also wrong. But to be honest my next set of tires will be 35s at least and the 3.21s will be tested and possibly tossed. But for now they are great. As for mileage... Well I have added 600 lbs to the jk and larger tires so it sucks, but it's a jk so I don't care.

I towed my 2,200lbs single axle trailer across the country (Canada) and had a full load inside the jeep (4 pers, 2 dogs and LOTS of gear) and I averaged 18mpg. The 3.21 gears on the 2012 + seem great to me!

I went with the 3.73 because the rated towing capacity was cut in half on the two door with the 3.21 gears, and did get get the towing package. With the stock 17" tires/wheels I'm averaging around 20 mpg city. I'm rarely on the highway, and around town, I feel the 3.73 gears make my typical stop and go traffic driving easier...

This is from the 2012 US Owner's Manual:
Engine/Transmission Axle Model Max. Trailer Tongue Wt.
3.6L/Manual 3.21 Two–Door 1,000 lbs 100 lbs
3.6L/Manual 3.73 Two–Door 2,000 lbs 200 lbs
3.6L/Automatic 3.73 Two–Door 2,000 lbs 200 lbs
3.6L/Manual 3.21 Four–Door 1,000 lbs 100 lbs
3.6L/Manual 3.73 Four–Door 3,500 lbs 350 lbs
3.6L/Automatic 3.73 Four–Door 3,500 lbs 350 lbs
I was actually surprised to see the 4-door Wrangler with 3.21 gears was only rated at 1,000 pounds towing capacity, I would have expected at least 2,000 due to the added weight and wheelbase!
