4 Wheel Low question
Try putting in 4L on the steepest hill you can find. There's a ridiculously steep hill heading out of Port Jeff Village going West on the North side 2 streets after the deli. I have no idea how they paved it to be honest. Any really steep hill will work, but if you go to Port then I can check out your rig. :-)
Let out the clutch and don't give it gas 1st gear. It'll just crawl right up the hill. effortlessly. The motor won't even strain. Yeah it's really slow but you'll really like that in certain situations. Add the lockers to the mix and it's falling in love all over again.
Don't turn on dry pavement in 4 wheel high or low. Your avalanche had a center diff which allowed the front and rear axle to turn at different speeds (if it was AWD). Jeep doesn't have that. (wranglers anyhow) I think the avalanche had a center diff lock as someone already said. That was the "L" I'm guessing.

Yes, and you should see what it can do to unattended shopping carts.
So here's a way to see how much more torque you have in 4lo than 2hi or 4hi. In 4lo start out in first and drive around 2000 RPM, keep your foot on the throttle and using the other foot try to stop the jeep. Note how hard you have to push the pedal to stop. Now put it into 4hi or 2hi and go the same speed, maintain your throttle like in 4lo and see how much brake it takes to stop the Jeep and kill the engine. If you had an automatic you could do this much easier - that's why people have to put big brake kits on a rig with three speed transfer cases with super low gearing, can't stop the creep with the OEM brakes due to the torque multiplication. You wont go fast in low range, but your flywheel torque is converted back to a larger torque at the wheels due to the gearing.

Yes you are right. Confused the avalanche with the Cherokee I had before. The avalanche was all push button and I never needed 4l other than to test it. The avalanche on Nitto Terragrapplers was SICK!!!
