Is this a manual or auto...either way you have to have it in neutral to go from 4hi to 4low

Its an auto and im on neutral and still that issue.

Yeah, that's not right then. In a manual you have to rock it a little bit sometimes. But I've never had the issue in my auto. I usually just come to a complete stop and throw it into neutral, I have heard of some people let it roll about 1 mph while in neutral and then shift into 4 low.

I actually had the same problem this weekend. Had to roll forward at about 1-2 mph then shifted to 2wd like butter

From the 2013 manual;

Shifting Procedure
2H to 4H or 4H to 2H
Shifting between 2H and 4H can be made with the
vehicle stopped or in motion. With the vehicle in motion,
the transfer case will engage/disengage faster if you
momentarily release the accelerator pedal after completing
the shift. Apply a constant force when shifting the
transfer case lever.

4H to 4L or 4L to 4H
With the vehicle rolling at 2 to 3 mph (3 to 5 km/h), shift an
automatic transmission into NEUTRAL (N), or press the
clutch pedal on a manual transmission. While the vehicle is
coasting at 2 to 3 mph (3 to 5 km/h), shift the transfer case
lever firmly to the desired position. Do not pause with the
transfer case in N (Neutral). Once the shift is completed,
place the automatic transmission into DRIVE or release the
clutch pedal on a manual transmission.
I had this same problem at first. I to thought something was wrong with transfer case. My 30 something year old CJ would just drop right into 4LO. Coming out you HAD to back up several feet to get it to unwind.
But my new Rubicon was a bi*** at first. Read the manual and found this little news flash.
So now let me get this strait I need 4LO because I am stuck up to my hubs in mud, but yet I need to be rolling 2-3 MPH in order to get it to go in...Oh WTF really?

However it seems like the more I have put it in and out, now it has kind of broke in or something and will slip in and out pretty easy. Guess its better to get into 4LO before you really need it.
Also again they really like to be backed up a bit after your all done with 4WD and are coming out.

Maybe a big part of it was me just learning to drive it.

Hope this helps you.

Had a similar issue yesterday was in 4hi and on its own it jumped out of 4hi to neutral. When I tried to put it back it sounded like gears grinding. Could not get it in 2wd. I was on a slight angle so not sure if that's why it wouldn't get into 2wd.

Shifter bushings? Or cable retainer? All plastic that breaks

drps137 03-28-2015 08:12 AM

Thanks to all, im gonna see if are the shifter bushings or linkages problems, i can tell that the gears need to be disengage thats why they tell us to be in motion or in a level surface, anyway thanks again for the support im gonna get back to you with the solution. Good luck to all on the Trails this Easter.
