5w-40 oil analysis results
#21
There are some good points about 40 weight oil not vaporizing as easy as 20 weight. I have had several motors that have suffered from vaporizing which ends up feeding oil through the intake and back into the combustion chamber. Too much oil in the chamber causes pinging and fouled plugs/dirty chamber and valves.
My worst offender was my blown Trans Am, the rings were shot and that just added to the thin oil being burned. My current offender is the 540 cc engine in my Deere Garden tractor. With the rings worn the crank pressure pushes thinner oil up into the air filter and coats it.

8600 miles on 5w-40 -- Analysis Good
To me, these UOA results for 5W-40 look quite good for 8600 miles without adding any oil.
Element PPM
Iron 30
Chromium 0
Nickel 0
Aluminum 4
Copper 34
Lead 1
Tin 0
Cadmium 0
Silver 0
Vanadium 0
Silicon 12
Sodium 18
Potassium 3
Titanium 0
Molybdenum 4
Antimony 0
Manganese 1
Lithium 0
Boron 47
Driving conditions have been everything from 5000 RPM and full throttle up mountain roads, to lugging below idle RPM in 4Lo -- Typical severe service. Oil consumption is zero (still at the full mark), so there is no dilution of contaminants/wear metal from adding new oil.

19.8 MPG Highway
For those curious if the MPG suffered with 5w-40 oil, my experience is that it doesn't. Just back from a good vacation on some desert trails. 1775 miles of highway pavement as well -- 19.8 MPG was the average. Not bad for a Rubi with 2.5" lift loaded with camping gear.

For the same reasons that Jeep recommends that our vehicles NOT be lifted, and that out bumpers are fine, and our fenders are functionally perfect, and our headlights adequate...
The oil recommendations are just that. Recommendations. What will be adequate for most owners vehicles in most climates. Not perfect for anyone in every climate/condition.

I stopped using the mfgrs recommendation when I started having oil loss at 30k.
Also, 5w-20 was loud and rattled. I switched to 5w-30 and changed the PCV and have seen my oil consumption drop in half and the jeep just sounds better.
There is no noticeable difference in mpg fuel consumption.
Since switching to 5w-30, I now use about 1/2 quart every 2500 miles. Before switching to 5w-30 I was using a full quart about every 3k miles.
So, it's my jeep. I paid cash for it. I do all of my own maintenance and research. I doubt I will ever go back to the mfgrs recommendation of 5w-20 again.

I'm green on oil also. I understood that lower viscosity for lower temps - higher for higher. That 10w-40 covered 10 through 40 range.
I'm running Castrol Edge 5w-50 (with Mobil 1 filter). I live in western Colo so some days I'm wheeling up in the mountains (still snow there) and some days down to Moab and the heat. I "assumed" that 5w-50 gave me the best diversity in coverage??
I also figured using synthetic out covered any standard oil??
