5w-40 oil analyses -- 8500 mile interval
8500 miles on this run of 5w-40, no oil added. The numbers are pretty much the same except that silicon was up 5 ppm, which may be from cleaning the air filter (AEM 28-20364). Usage this interval was the usual mix of city, highway, and off-road. Looks like this engine is on track for a long life.
Aluminum (AL) 3 ppm
Iron (FE) 17 ppm
Copper (CU) 18 ppm
Lead (PB) 0 ppm
Tin (SN) 0 ppm
Chromium (CR) 1 ppm
Nickel 0 ppm
Cadmium 0 ppm
Silver 0 ppm
Vanadium 0 ppm
Silicon 18 ppm
Sodium 12 ppm
TBN 4.6
Notes:
Amsoil DEO 5w-40 (diesel/gasoline rated) oil. Oversize oil filter (that is used on the 2008 Jeep Liberty 3.7L) NAPA PFL 41516 / Wix 51516XP. Total miles using 5w-40 are ~63500. Total miles on Jeep are ~74500.

I ran M1 0w40 for awhile in my JK and it ran just fine. I hoped it would reduce oil consumption. It seemed like it did, but then I went back to M1 5w30EP and the consumption stayed about the same. I'm running dino (non-synthetic) Pennzoil yellow bottle 5w30 right now because someone told me they ran it and had lower oil consumption, so I thought it wouldn't hurt to try it. We'll see how it does, but I'll probably go right back to the EP at the next oil change.
Honestly, I think my 3.8 is going to drink just under a quart of oil per 1k miles as long as it lives, no matter what I do. It runs like new and performs as expected. It just has a drinking problem.

Mr. T, how much oil was yours consuming before the 5w40?

Well, my 3.8 didn't like the Pennzoil yellow bottle 5w30. It drank at least a quart per 1000 miles. I just put Mobil 1 High Mileage 5w30 in there yesterday. I haven't tried this one previously because it was SL rated. It is now SN rated, so we'll see how it does. I run SN oil to protect the cat converters, btw.

For reference, mine was 1/3 to 1/2 quart below the full mark on the dip stick before changing the oil/filter last time (8500 miles).

I need to leave this open do I can post my results but running 5w-30 with 1qt Lucas additive it's probably close to 5w-40 and Blackstone said it was wearing well with nothing unusual happening. I was at 10k and they suggested I could go to 12k changes if I wanted to do so. 145k on the clock and zero consumption.

Thanks for posting that Karl. That's a nice oil report!
The range for grade 40 oil is 12.5 to 16.3 Cst, so the Lucas has changed the (100 deg C) viscosity to grade 40 (14.43) as you suspected.
I'm changing my oil too early as well, but it's a compromise with available time.

Remember, the spectral (elemental) analysis is only telling you what is there in the 2-5 micron range, for anything bigger you need to look in the filter.

For me if I start seeing 12.5-12.7 I start to become concerned with fuel dilution or contamination (wrong oil during top off) for a xxW-40 at 100°C.
