Default 6 Speed Transmission Rebuild (partial) Advice - Fixing 1st Gear Issue.

So I have been having the Jumps of Gear (JOG) problem with my JK since I bought it used (and out of warranty) and I finally purchased the parts kit found in the TSB TSB 21-001-10 REV A Here & Here for the local dealership from $190 including Tax. I was quoted $1400 for the dealership to perform the TSB . So I was planning on having a local mechanic replace the 1st gear and 1st & 2nd Synchro but I'm that guy that likes to learn and then do it myself. I have the Factory Service Manual on Disc and removal and disassembly looks pretty straightforward.

My question is for people who have worked on Transmissions before. Any tips or advice before I dive into this project? Are there any special tools that I'll have to have? Will the input shaft pull out with some force applied or do I need to find an input shaft puller tool as in the TSB?

Thanks in advance!

If you have to ask, this is one of those things you don't learn as you go. I've never touched a tranny, nor will I, for that exact reason. Take it to a mechanic, save the heartache of tranny surgery.

X2; if you can remove it from the Jeep first yourself then you're saving a ton of cash in labor. An experienced transmission specialist should then be able to get the work done on the box itself in 2-4 hours I'm guessing, so if you supply the parts you're then only paying for a few hours labor to have the job done properly. I have messed around with old 3 & 4-speed GM trannys before to replace input shaft bearings (didn't need a puller for those) and synchros and they were pretty straight forward & the tolerances fairly loose, but I suspect the 6-speed is a different matter entirely.

Then again, if you have plenty of time & have a trans guy nearby to help you with advice if you get stuck you could always give it a go.

Those were basically my thoughts. I know I can pull the tranny, I've done it before, and if I did get stuck or relized that I was in over my head then I could take the tranny to the shop and save considerable labor in that alone. The service manual has good info and illustrations, I'll let you all know how it went. Thanks for the advice!

Default Just had mine fixed

I got my recently acquired 2008 Sahara back yesterday for the jumping out of first gear issue. Luckily I bought the extended warranty. They had to replace my clutch also due to the pressure plate going bad. That cost me. What's up with Chrysler transmissions. Everyone I talk too has issues with their manual and automatic transmissions. This is my 3rd Jeep, 1st Wrangler and I hope this issue is resolved. The mechanic said they replaced the 1st gear and synchro. It took them 9 days to repair this due the fact that they could not locate 1 simple part - the oil washer. Jeep must be repairing alot of this babies. It shifts great now and all the gears engage better w/o that god awful clunking and chatter. I love my new Wrangler but hope I made the right choice trading in my Grand Cherokee Laredo.

I want to thank everyone on the forum for bringing up this issue. Being a newbie I thought it was my shifting abilities even though I have been driving a stick for many moons. When I took it to the dealer and mentioned the TSB he confirmed this fact and just said bring her in and we will fix - no test drive or anything.

Please keep us posted with your fix, and if you can, try to take pictures. Me and the jeep community will highly appreciate it.

Thanks for the info you sent me.

So it has been months now, is it taking you that long to fix it or what? What was the final decision?

Got the tranny fixed a couple months ago. I'm happy to report that after 2k miles of driving after the repair, it has not once kicked it out of gear. They replaced parts as per a tsb. I'm VERY happy with the repair.

Those "bad" gearboxes are made by Gertag, one of major transmission suppliers to BMW and MB name a few...

Gertag seems to be captive to "value engineering" by taking good designs and turning them to trash in the same saving a few pennies. It took four dealer visits before they finally agreed we had a tranny issue...

I don't agree. I think this is a fine transmission. Popping out of gear was an issue, but beyond that, I've been pleased with it.
