x2 on the aFe Pro. mpg went up 1 to 1-1/2, can wash and let dry - no oiling so no over/under oiling and no supplies to buy, or if you can't wait u can just vacuum it and still get 90% life back until you can wash it.

Mine is the CAI - it was an easy install as well, just can't fully open the fuse box cover, but still opens better than 90 degrees

I recall a mechanic posting on here recently that he's seen engine failures in JKs due to the use of the K&N filters in dusty conditions, as dirt and sand particles were getting through & wrecking the rings and valves. Apparantly they're fine for road use but not ideal for offroading in dusty conditions.

K&N will warranty any MAF that dies due to one of their filters. Also, there are a lot of desert racers running K&N filters without a problem as long as you clean and oil them correctly.

I used a Mopar air filter when I replaced mine. It was only around $20 at the dealer.

K&N filters are rebuilds waiting to happen in dusty areas like Nevada. On my RZR, the K&N lets way too much dust past the media. PAper for me, but interested in the AFE/Rugged Ridge dry synthetic panel .

I run the AFE/RR filter here in western Washington but will switch to Wix paper soon when we head to the AZ/CA desert for the rest of the winter.

I think you ought to re-read that warranty:

WHAT IS NOT COVERED BY OUR WARRANTY
Any K&N product used for 1: any type of racing or competition; 2: any off-road use, custom or modified applications; 3: any off-road or dual sport motorcycle/ ATV use; or 4: any illegal highway use, marine, or industrial applications. All K&N Air Filters not covered by our million mile warranty are warranted against defective materials or workmanship for one year from date of purchase with no mileage limitation. This includes K&N Air Filters sold for ATV's and off-highway or dual-purpose motorcycles.

INCORRECT CLEANING OR USE VOIDS WARRANTY
K&N Air Filters should be cleaned every 50,000 miles for normal highway use, more often in dusty conditions. Cleaning should be done with K&N cleaner and air filter oil (or comparable air filter cleaner and oil). Use of compressed air, or chemicals not specifically designed to clean and re-oil cotton air filters (i.e. gasoline, transmission fluid, motor oil, lightweight oil, or diesel fuel) will void the warranty. Any damaged, abused or modified K&N Air Filters will not be warranted.

EXTENT OF WARRANTY
Any defective K&N Air Filter properly returned to K&N will be replaced. K&N reserves the right to determine whether the terms of the warranty, set out above, have been properly complied with. In the event that the terms are not complied with, K&N shall be under no obligation to honor this warranty. K&N will not be responsible for any indirect, consequential, special, contingent, or other damages.

ENGINE PROTECTION LIMITED WARRANTY
Unlike many companies, our warranty for O/E replacement air filters and intake systems does extend beyond the replacement of a defective K&N part. For the original purchaser of the product, our warranty covers any engine damage or related costs incurred as a direct result of the use of a properly installed and maintained K&N O/E automotive replacement air filter or intake system on the specific vehicle for which the product was designed to be used by K&N. This includes reasonable vehicle repair costs directly related to an engine problem caused by the failure of a K&N product. Furthermore, we warrant that using our product will not result in a vehicle warranty denial. K&N will not be responsible for any indirect, consequential, special, contingent, or other damages not listed above.

We will promptly reimburse the consumer for the cost of the repair if a service provider denies warranty coverage as a result of a K&N product or claims that a K&N product has caused harm to your engine or vehicle. In order to receive reimbursement, we require each of the following:

1.The consumer must provide a written statement or repair order from the dealership or service provider in which the dealership or service provider blames the problem or warranty denial on a K&N product;
2.The service provider or consumer must provide K&N with all allegedly damaged parts. Many states have laws that require a service provider to retain all parts replaced during a vehicle repair, unless given consent to dispose of the parts by the consumer. K&N will pay the shipping cost to recover these parts; and
3.The consumer must provide proof of purchase of the K&N product along with cooperation in helping us investigate the claim.
Once these steps have been completed, K&N will contact the service provider and collect evidence to support their claim. In the event we are not provided with sufficient evidence, we reserve the right to reject the claim and will use our best efforts to assist in establishing your rights toward the service provider under warranty or other provisions.

LABOR REIMBURSEMENT PROGRAM
K&N supports professional service providers who install and maintain K&N replacement air filters and intake systems. In the event a properly installed and maintained K&N product causes damage to an engine in any way, we will cover the cost of labor associated with the technician's removal and replacement of a K&N part covered under our Engine Protection Limited Warranty. This is at a standard hourly rate of $80 per hour for the labor units listed in the "Mitchell 1 Mechanical Labor Estimating Guide", or similar publication. Upon receipt of a valid repair order listing the removal or replacement of a K&N product covered under our Engine Protection Limited Warranty, K&N will issue reimbursement within 5-7 business days.

A properly installed K&N product should not cause the Service Light to illuminate. The service light is a warning from the car's computer that something appears abnormal with the car. It does not always mean something is, in fact, wrong with the car and some conditions can cause a false warning. A Service Light can be triggered because the engine is sensing denser air than it expects based on ambient conditions and expected restriction. In that instance, it would trigger a code signifying a Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor error or lean condition because the Engine Control Module (ECM) is reading air density outside the range it is expecting. These codes can also mean either there is a leak in the air delivery system that needs to be fixed; or the MAF sensor may need cleaning or replacement; or it may be a false warning when in fact nothing is wrong.

In the unlikely event that the Service Light comes on within the first week of installing a K&N High Flow air filter, contact our customer service department and we will help you resolve the issue. If the Service Light comes on after the K&N product has been installed for more than one week and the code is related to the MAF sensor or a "Lean" code, we recommend you visually inspect your air intake path and air filter for leaks. If no holes or cracks can be seen, and you experience no drivability issues it is reasonable to assume you have received a false service light. In that case, have the light reset and it should not recur.

A false reading while rare can be caused by a combination of factors that can momentarily cause the air density to go outside the expected range. Just a moment of an "out-of range" reading may cause the Service Light to illuminate. An example of factors that could cause a false reading is when there is a variation in normal driving conditions such as a vehicle that is under heavy acceleration, going uphill or pulling a trailer, all on a cold day. The three factors in tandem could take air density out of range momentarily and flip the light.

If after resetting the Service light once, it begins to display again, it is unlikely the light has anything to do with the K&N air filter or intake system and we suggest you diagnose the code as discussed below.

The Check Engine light or Service Light means that the vehicle's engine control module (ECM) has detected an error in one or more of the vehicle systems it monitors. There are more than 100 systems monitored by the ECM while the engine is running ranging from the complex such as ignition and exhaust gases to the simple such as lights and an improperly tightened gas cap. Each system monitored is designated a code, and when the Service Light illuminates, a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is set and stored in the memory of the ECM. Since 1996, these codes cannot be erased by removing power from the vehicle (disconnecting the battery). A scan tool must be used to read the DTC and/or clear them from the ECM's memory. This does not necessarily mean you must take your vehicle to a dealer or independent repair facility. Many auto parts stores are able to read and clear DTC's and turn off the Service Light. Additionally scan tools may be purchased for a modest amount of money and you can read the codes yourself. With the DTC in hand, you can determine whether your vehicle requires repair by calling a dealership repair department or your local auto parts store. If the code is for something simple like an improperly tightened gas cap, you may save yourself a lot of money by getting the code before going to a repair facility. In some instances the Service Light can go off by itself. That can happen because the ECM is pre-programmed by the manufacturer to both turn off the Service Light and clear the DTC from its memory after: (a) a certain number of "drive cycles" have been completed, and (b) the ECM does not monitor the same error again during that certain number of "drive cycles."

Looks like there are an awful lot of outs for K&N. As for desert racers, look at #2 in the 'What is Not Covered" section.
Desert racers just like track racers and drag racers normally have the engine rebuilt after every race, and are most likely sponsered by K&N, and that is not you.

K&N has a great adverstisement group, much llike STP did in the early 70's. I can still remember Andy Granatelli swearing by STP. How many of you are using it today.
