Default alternator problems!

Last night my jeep started acting up. I have a hypertech programmer which runs the idle speed up with drawing high amps from the motor. Last night my jeep started to squeal and then this morning i started it to see if it was still doing it and i realized somehting was burning. Sure enough i open the hood and the alternator was smoking bad. I turned the jeep of and it continued to smoke so i went to unplug the battery. I am very glad i did because the positive cable was smoking hot.
So now my question is obviously it has to be replaced but has anyone seen this?
What should i do besides just replace it?
Any help is appreciated.

Another source of heat at the battery terminal is a loose or corroded connection. Either one will increase the resistance, which generates heat.

the way you described it i thought it was the first time and then started smoking in any case i would or have my batt load tested and then go from there . with any electrical problem always start with the battery and go from there

That explains the alternator part of your problem. I don't see how it addresses your hot battery terminal, though.

maybe the bearings were so shot that it allowed the stator to contact the inside of the case in effect a short very little clearance in there anyways
