Default The Black Box

Okay, I've been staring at this thing for a while and was wondering.... what in the heck is this black box next to the rear drive shaft?

ESP system maybe? New Jeep secret surprise waffle iron? Or, maybe it's a new vehicle black box recorder

Seriously, call me stupid but I have no idea what it is

I wish it was the second glovebox so when it get knocked by a rockand fall, all I was missing is an empty box. Really, if this is the ESP system, then I will surely have to want it remove. Someone tells that the dealer is able to do that but will they kill the ABS system by the same time. I'm not a fan of ABS but my wife will surely like it.

It is the evap canister for the emission control system. In earlier TJ's it was under the hood. In about '03 it moved to the right rear corner panel, up behind the right rear wheel.

You pretty much cannot remove it. It is part of the required emissions system.

On another subject, I figured out why the muffler is SO BIG... So after you beat down to half its size while wheeling, it still works ok!

It seem to be very low so we will have to figure how to protect it or move it higher

EVAP Canister, huh? Damn that thing is huge!! And, I wonder why it's located so far away from the engine? With the Unlimiteds long wheel base, I'd have a hard time thinking this thing won't gonna get smooshed on the trail sooner or later.

As far as the muffler goes, rumor has it that skid plates are already being developed for it if you can believe it

Heck, in the JK it's only half as far as it was in the later TJ's. It is right behind the right tail light in them!

It catches the fumes that evaporate from the gas tank and then allows them to be burned when the engine is running.

Right, but why so far away from the engine? On my CJ, the EVAP cannister is located just behind the driver side fender. Is under the belly next to the rear drive shaft really the best and/or only place to locate it? I mean, who knows, maybe it is.

Hmmm, let me think - a smaller, lighter, great sounding aftermarket muffler or a skid for the giant factory one!!
