Broken Windshields
I had to replace my windshield when a rock hit it on the edge. The glass repairman said it is common on these newer Jeeps because there is no rubber molding around the edge, just exposed glass. Basically, a poor design.
The glass man is BS'ing you. The glass chips and breaks easily because of the upright angle of the Jeep windshield frame. The previous Jeeps, TJ, YJ, and CJ broke constantly because they stood up almost 90 degrees. The force of rock strike energy is deflected very effectively if the glass is swept back. That's why cars don't break as easily. The Jeep glass is required to meet Motor Vehicle Safety Act requirements for breakage. Whether or not it has a glass surround welt is immaterial, if struck near the edge, welt or not it will chip or crack. This is not ''poor design''. You guys driving around with broken glasses should be aware that your airbag function can be affected by the glass being cracked. The passenger side glass ''backs up'' that airbag when deployed. The bag depends on the glass to help absorb the deacceleration forces of your passengers face and body striking it. It inflates and deflates so quickly that cracks that happen during a wreck won't affect bag function. Also, $0.00 deductible comp is not that expensive, a $100.00 deductible on glass will hurt you in the long run when owning a JK.
