Buying first jeep wrangler

Thinking about buying a jeep as my first car soon. I was wondering what the best year for the wrangler is as far as reliability. Also any other information that would help me make a good decision would be greatly appreciated! Thanks a lot!

Is there any problems they are notorious for?
How bad is it really for pavement driving?
How to greatly improve gas mileage?
Far cost for buying a used jeep?
If you have 15000 budget.

If you only have $15000 to buy a jeep look for a tj, you will get a better jeep fot that kind of money. If you find a jk for that amount it will have tons of miles, or just beat up.

As noted above, look for a TJ. See if you can find an unlimited. You will be much happier with the extra cargo space. I am on my 5th jeep currently (CJ, 3 TJs, JKU). I loved the simplicity of the 4.0 liter straight 6. Very durable engines and very easy to maintain and repair.

As a first car, I would suggest you try to find one close to stock and learn to drive it and build it as you get more comfortable. Just make sure if you get a TJ that you get one with the Dana 44 rear axle. If you could find a rubicon unlimited, then you would be starting with a great platform.

FYI: I know I am new here, just picked up my JKU a month ago, but I started with a CJ back in 1993 and have been driving jeeps every since.

What's the difference between TJ and JK?

TEXASJK 01-03-2013 06:33 AM

motor, trans,interior,everything

Jeep TJ 1997 - 2006
Jeep Jk 2007 - current

Jeep TJ = 4.0 liter straight 6 engine
Jeep JK = 3.6/3.8 liter V6 engine

Jeep Jk is larger and is offered in 4 door version. Jeep TJ offered an extended wheelbase version called the unlimited but still only had 2 doors.

Way more differences than that but it is a start.

TJ was in production from 97 thru 2006 the JK is the current Jeep Wrangler in production 2007-Present but 2007-2010 have one look 2010 they changed something small and dumb on the top but I'm not sure what, 2011 they changed and updated the interior only and put a larger rear Window on both hard and soft tops in 2012 they released the 3.6 pentastar motor but it's still the same body style
