Good job. Glad you got it to work. You should be rolling very slightly in neutral to engage it in 4WD, just like the manual says. NOT sitting still.

Thats what it says to do in the manual to put it in 4LO, I don't think you have to be moving at all to put it in 4HI.

That's true, but it doesn't hurt a thing.

First time I went 4L the shift was fine, but back to 4H I surely crunched the gears. I was rolling at 5mph, I guess too fast, or is a crunch a frequent occurence? Thanks Dave.

To be honest I like to be rolling slightly before I put it in 4HI, just for peace of mind haha

I think you're supposed to have your transmission in neutral whether shifting into or out of 4LO. I dont remember if it needs to be in neutral when shifting out, haven't used 4LO in a while.

I wasn't in neutral, just had the clutch in.

So neutral is required? Also a crunch should not happen?

It should be in neutral even with a clutch. There's enough friction with the air gap between the clutch disc and pressure plate to keep the input shaft turning.

Okay, the book says not to stop at N when doing the shift, that's why I pushed right up and crunched the gears. Maybe I did things too quickly?

Going into or out of low range you want to be barely rolling. At 5 mph it probably sounded ugly! If you find yourself stuck at a dead stop and the T-case won't shift, hold pressure against the T-case lever in the direction you want it to go and very slowly ease out on the clutch. As the input shaft starts to turn over the T-case should mesh and drop into gear.
