Turn key to on position (but don't start)

push the key into the ignition cylinder and while holding it in, and while holding it in turn to off and back to on 3 times, ending in the on position

If you did it right, all the dash lights will light up and the odometer will be a series of dashes. After the dashes, it will then display any codes (be ready to write them down since you may have more than one).

Once you have the code, that will help out a ton. It could be so many different things to something little like gas cap not on tight to you name it.

Let us know.

I have a problem with the check engine light also so I tried what was suggested. It did work and a code came up. Unfortunately, I didn't have a pen with me and I forgot the last 2 numbers. In addition, although I can get the dashes to display, the code won't come up again. Any ideas?

I know the code was P 04 and then I think 96, but I'm not sure about the 96.

Any help will be appreciated.

There are only two codes in the p04 series:
p0406-Egr Position Sensor Circuit High
or
p0456-Evap Purge System Small Leak

also the codes should still come up because they havent been cleared from the system, but if it doesnt come back up again then it may have cleared itself...so you may not have the check engine light coming on when you get back in, although sadly that is highly unlikely.

for a complete list of DTC's you can refer to this page:

http://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/

Great site with all (I think) obd codes.

A P0306 code means that the vehicles computer has detected that one of the engine's cylinders is not firing properly. In this case it's cylinder #6.

You can also pull codes by holding the trip odometer stalk while off then turning your Jeep on while still depressing the stalk.
