I've used 0 wgt 30 synthetic since I got my Jeep and no issues after 209000 kms.

A coworker just had a crate 3.8 installed, and his calls for 10w30 as well

I buy into no oil hype due to these experiences. This engine is just garbage.
I drove a 92 GMC Sonoma with a 4.3 for 13 years, and it consumed about a quart of oil every oil change (which was done religiously at every 3000 miles, including regular tuneups). I tried all different brands of oil, from 5-30 in the winter and 10-40 in the summer. Never any change in the oil consumption. I was told it needed valve seals a few months after I bought it, but never got it done. Slight puff of blue on every start up if it sat for more than a few hours, but even when I sold it at over 180,000 miles the guy buying it couldn't believe how great it still ran and how much power it still had. I'm a firm believer that a good engine will remain so if you maintain it, and a bad one will also remain bad no matter what. That said, i'm still considering switching from the 5-20 in my 09 JK, though my mechanic doesn't recommend it as he knows of some vehicles where it will eventually cause some sensor issues. I've been burning around a quart and a half between oil changes since the first year (bought the JK new), and the dealer wouldn't warranty an engine job even though they performed an oil consumption test (during which over 800 miles it burned 1 1/4 quarts). The consumption isn't constant, it's random. It wouldn't burn any for a week then the next week it would go through half a quart. I've been told it's because of poor quality control on the piston heads, rings & valves, and so in some startups it all seats well and doesn't burn oil, and some where they don't and it does.

Default 3.8L Engine Bombed, old engine 5w20 new engine 10w30 ?

I had a engine fan stop working and the engine over heat on a recent trip, almost 90K on a 2007 Rubicon JKU. I have a android App the reads all engine parms from OBD2 so I get real numbers. After I saw the engine get just below 240, I let cool down and found the radiator empty. I put almost 3/4 gal of 50/50 in to it and went offroad the next day. Engine over heated again on way home to the point the light came on the dash at 260. Also heard some rattling in lower gears. Got home antifreeze gone again in radiator. another 3/4 and ran engine everything seemed ok. Again I was 500 miles from home and took it to the dealer to check. He informed me the fan seized and the noise I heard was the engine bearing, the oil showed everything, pretty as a snow globe and bronze looking and it stunk with anti freeze. Now I know where it went. He also informed me that these 3.8L start to self destruct at 240 and suck the anti freeze into the crank. Damage was already done the day I arrive. So all that said the new engine from Chrysler oil cap now says 10w30 and my old engine says 5w20.....Hmmm guess what, father made a mistake! So this replace engine will get Syn 10w30 now and not 5w20 as it says on the old one. Also just about all the mechanics says "DO NOT LET YOU OIL GO MUCH BEYOND 3000mi BEFORE YOU CHANGE IT." I never have and plan to not change now. So word to the wiser and $5000 poorer, think hard about the oil you use and Keep It Clean.

Keeping it clean and full is the way to go. I go 10k miles between changes in my 3.8 and she doesn't skip a beat. I'll catch flak and that's fine but it works for me. I've had the oil tested after usage and it shows the oil is still performing at an acceptable level.

I'm a platinum HM 5w-30 user with 1qt of Lucas stabilizer. I made the high mileage switch after 9 yrs and 150k miles. She's sitting on 165k miles and running well.

im still using recommended oil. Just rolled over 150,000 miles...

I recently relocated from Central IL to Mid TN.
It's a bit warmer here... I'm planning on viscosity change this next oil change.

I've owned this JKU for about a year. I've had the oil changed a couple of times. I've been adding oil every 3rd fill up.
