Default Correct way of putting it in 4 wheel drive?

I have an 08 X. What is the correct way of putting it in 4 wheel drive. Do I have to stop it?

Page 281 of the 2008 owners manual gives details:

Shifting Procedure
2H to 4H or 4H to 2H
Shifting between 2H and 4H can be made with the
vehicle stopped or in motion. If the vehicle is in motion,
shifts can be made up to 50 mph (80 km/h). With the
vehicle in motion, the transfer case will engage/
disengage faster if you momentarily release the accelerator
pedal after completing the shift. Apply a constant
force when shifting the transfer case lever.
4H to 4L or 4L to 4H
With the vehicle rolling at 2 to 3 mph (3 to 5 km/h), shift
an automatic transmission to N (Neutral) or depress the
clutch pedal on a manual transmission. While the vehicle
is coasting at 2 to 3 mph (3 to 5 km/h), shift the transfer
case lever firmly to the desired position. Do not pause in
transfer case N (Neutral).
NOTE: Shifting into or out of 4L is possible with the
vehicle completely stopped, however, difficulty may occur
due to the mating teeth not being properly aligned.
Several attempts may be required for clutch teeth alignment
and shift completion to occur. The preferred
method is with the vehicle rolling at 2 to 3 mph (3 to 5
km/h). Avoid attempting to engage or disengage 4L with
the vehicle moving faster than 2 to 3 mph (3 to 5 km/h).

you can put it in 4-hi while drivbing in 2wd. i've put mine in 4-hi going 40 mph with no probs. 4-lo is a little trickier,i usually come to a slow roll put it in neutral and drop it in 4-lo.if you try to go into 4-lo going any speed you will grind pretty badly. i have an auto by the way. hope that helps

Thanks for the help. I have been stopping and putting it in "N" and then shifting to 4 wheel drive and everything engaged ok. I just wanted to make sure.

The main thing is to make sure your front and rear wheels are going the same speed. Let off the gas so the rear wheels are not spinning any faster than the front and you can shift at any reasonable speed, I do it all the time.

Does anyone have a slight grinding sound when putting it into 4 low. My automatic seems to grind for a second then the teeth lock.

No. It went smooth the way I did it. However, when I had my '95 YJ I had a hard time with it, many years ago. The JK was smooth..

If I need to switch while I'm driving, I let off the gas, throw it into neutral, throw it into 4hi then put it back into gear. It might be overkill but whatever... works for me.
