Default CV joint

Ok I'm starting to get a crickety double/triple chirp when I give gas or release gas while coasting. If I accelerate hard an shift (non sloppy) I can't hear it....I'm thinking one of the CV joints on one of the shafts is going bad (97,000k 2nd owner) is there an easy way to check? I think if I drop the front shaft and drive around and no noise I found the culprit....any other suggestions on the noise? I don't think it's clutch because it makes the noise even If I don switch gears.
