D44 housing...what else?

I just picked up a d44 off craigslist. It does not have gears, carrier, shafts. What can I keep from my d30 and what will I need? Thanks!

Errrm, can we assume you plan on replacing your front? If so, you can transfer the knuckles/brakes and that is about it. You will need gears, carrier, shafts, etc.

It's a D44 off another JK I hope?

Yes it is to replace my front d30 and yes it is from a jk...thanks for the responses.

I was planning on regearing soon anyway, but what if I get a rubicon factory selectable locker? Will I still need a carrier?

Nope... lockers are used instead of a carrier, except for "lunchbox" type lockers. The factory e-locker is not a lunchbox type, so you won't need a carrier.

You will be able to re-use the 32sp outer shafts also. You will need to buy the 30sp inner shafts.

Unless you can find a smoking deal on a used rubi locker, expect to dump about $1200 on that alone. Plus the wiring/switches for it.

A better option would be to get a 35sp ARB locker and new 35sp shafts. It will bit a few hundred more than a new factory locker (maybe the same as a factory locker and inner shafts?), but will be a much, much better use of the money.

And if you haven't already, look into outer sleeves and gussets also. (inner sleeves will interfere with the 35sp shafts, if you choose to go that route)

Great info! The guy I bought the d44 from has a friend that's got a factory locker laying around and will sell. I think I will go that route for now. All I will need then is inner shafts and gears if I'm soaking all this info in correctly ... Thanks

Don't forget axle seals and axle guides... These are $8 parts from the dealer, but you'll want them.

What are the pros/cons of picking up a used set of 30spline rubicon axle shafts vs. using the 32spline shafts that are on my D30 now?
