Exclamation Darn.... Help please

So, I was on my way home and, well My jeep stranded me.
Ok, 2dr 07 X manual transmission.
On my way to work I stalled out tryin' to get going from a stop. Hasn't happened in years. On my way home It sounded like I grinded my gears for a second while in first starting from a stop. Then it smelled like I was burning something like tryin' to pull someone out of the mud. A small puff of black smoke from either under the passengerside fender or from the under the hood.
Then I couldn't Move. at all. I can shift to 1-6 and Reverse but no response. I shifted to 4h thinking maybe it was the rear drive shaft, but nada. 4L nothing. I can hear my clutch moving when I press it, (it creaks). I can shift between any gear without the clutch.
It feels like I move the shifter but it doesn't actually shift anything..

Any mechanics on here know what It may be? I will get it towed to a shop later in the week. great way to end a 12 hour shift...

Sorry to hear this. Sounds like your clutch. Have you been playing in mud or water?

Secrets out. Well, Sad to say it has been around a year or more since I got time to play in the mud.

So perhaps a clutch. That sounds cheaper than a transmission.

If the smell smelled like hot brakes, then it was the clutch slipping. Clutch and brakes smell the same, most people can recognize burning brakes first. Is the clutch pedal release point high, too? Most likely a clutch though.

I love that smell, you can almost taste it it's so strong. I burned the clutch out of my old 1500. Not fun!

And the way the smell lingers long after you've replaced the clutch. You'd smell it randomly weeks later.
