Default Differential oil level

I was checking the oil level of my front differential (Dana 44), and the oil is not at the same level of the hole of the drain nut.

I put my small finger into the hole, and the oil level is about 1/2 inch lower. Is it okay, or should I add some oil ???

I hope you meant fill hole.
Assuming the Jeep is on level ground, and you have a stock differential cover:
The oil level should be at least as high as the bottom if the fill hole.
Top it off.

I guess I don't understand what you are asking in the first post. I thought you were saying the fluid level was 1/2" below the fill hole. My response was very clear what you should do if it is true your fluid level is 1/2" below the fill hole.

That's how it used to be done. That procedure will likely result in an overfill condition. The differentials have a fill capacity listed in the owner's manual. It may or may not end up coming up to the fill hole.

I made a mistake!!!

My cover is the Rancho model, and the is 2 holes

The upper hole is the "Fill Hole"

The lower hole is the "Level Hole"

I filled oil to the level of the upper hole !!!

Gear oil expands as it gets hot so a little below the fill hole is ok, less chance of the oil blowing out the vent or one of the seals.
