Default Dust coming in fresh air vents - preventable?

Dust is coming in through the air vents. When I put on the A/C after wheeling for several hours down dirt roads I get a blast of dust flying out the vents. I tried using the recirc mode, windows up, windows down, fan on low, med, or high; various combinitions but nothing works. What a stupid design - it sure ain't FRESH air, more like DUSTY air!!!

I took off the cowl to see what was under there in hopes to stopping the dirty air entering.

Anyone have an idea of which of these openings is leading into the interior?

Also note the big gap in the hood weather seal that does not go all the way to the edge of the fender.

My thoughts were to add a filter over the cowl opening IF I could seal up the other openings that are letting in the dusty air. I did a test with just a filter over the opening but that did nothing. I want to use the cowl scoop to hide the filter.

If you have to use your ac during offroad trail rides then you should always have it in recirc mode or you will end up having your evap assy covered in dirt and then you won't have any air flow no matter what speed you set the fan motor on. I work on lots of farms turcks where we have to reomove the blower motor and get into the evap box and clean off the evap assy due to no air coming from the registers. You should just due offroading with the blower system in off and don't turn it back on until you have done a few miles down the highway which will blow most of the dust out of the system. After being on the highway a bit turn it onto vent with the windows still down and the fan on high and that should clear everything out quickly. Hope that helps you a little.

If you remove the plastic glove box, there is a fan and wire mesh.
It may be possible to put an air filter over the mesh to prevent dust.
Had an Nissan Xterra and this was where the air filter was.
Or...as stated, when back on the highway, windows down, vents
pointed to windows; turn on blower high.

That would be a good place to put a filter for the recirulated air...

There are so many ways for so called fresh air to enter the cabin, you can't et them all...

you could try hunting for the inlet with a smoking candle...or for a couple bucks some wind direction indicator from your local hunting goods store...have the system on and see from where it draws the air in
I must admit, it's been a bit of an annoyance for me as well sometimes, the addition of a cabin filter would be nice...I guess they figured in designing Jeeps that with doors and tops off we wouldn't care much about dust in our faces, and usually I don't, but when I'm buttoned up I wouldn't mind the added benefit

Take a wet\vac and use the blow side (not the suck side) and use it on all the vents with blower motor off while rotating the position select knob

It's a shame Jeep stopped putting cabin filters in the Wrangler. Mine has one and it's great, when the top is on, and your cruising the dusty roads or they're plowing the fields around here. It does a really good job filtering the recirculated air and keeping the dust under control. I asked for a part number at the dealer last time I was there with the intentions of getting a replacement and the parts guy just gave me the

If you are talking about your '07 JK, I would like to see a picture of your cabin air filter.
(Or at least a description of where it is.)
