Empty Fumes
 

So a cheesy question but one that might be nice to know in the outlands. Where does E actually sit at? Some cars you hit E and can drive for 100 miles others get to 1/4 and your on the side waving down for a hitch to the old petro depo. I dont want to find out exactly where it is at the hard way while i am in a moutain lion infested area, hiking back to get to the nearest road.
And I dont trust the DTE indicator

Once you hit E you might have the most 3gal. left; probably more like 2. Do the math for what you usually get per gal. If I had to worry about lions and tigers and bears (oh my) I would carry extra petrol/gas/fuel on board.

When the low fuel warning light comes on, there is supposed to be around 50 highway miles left in the tank. If I get fuel soon after the light comes on, there is usually 2-3 gallons left. 2-3 gallons is not going to last 50 miles on the trail, though.

I think the DTE indicator will give an honest estimate if you reset the mpg when you hit the trail. That way DTE is calculated on your trail MPG, rather than being averaged in with your highway MPG.

whenever mine hits E and then i fill up i usually have about 3 gallons and this is after my indicator starts saying low fuel haha. i dont really try to push it, i dont want to run out of gas and get stranded somewhere.

Note i have a 2dr so its an 18.6 or so gal tank

Well I obviously dont want to stand myself so I will be getting a extra gas tank mount of some sort. thanks on info.


So any reviews for a gas can carrier? plastic or metal?
Imma start searching old posts see what i can come up with but figured i would tackle it both ways.

I found myself on a deserted highway at night with an empty gas tank as the gas station I had planned to stop at had closed early. The next gas station was about 20 miles away and I crawled there in 6th gear at 1000RPM & 45MPH with the needle on dead empty the whole way. When I filled up and subtracted what I put in it showed I had half a gallon left.

So I'm guessing if you take it slowly, keep the revs low and the manifold backpressure high (ie: pretend there is an egg lodged under the gas pedal that you want to avoid cracking) and the road is flat and free of traffic you can get maybe between 20-30 miles once the needle is completely at the empty mark.
