Yes. The 3.8 is an interference engine.

That is no good.

Do you know if Chrysler uses a chain or belt in these motors?

It is a chain.

In my opinion, that makes up for being an interference engine.

I agree, if it were a belt I was going to cry myself to sleep since I would be rolling around on that "questionable" life expectancy soon.

A quick search revealed:
2002-2006 Toyota Camry 2.4L 4 cylinder has a chain.
2004 and newer Toyota 3.0L and 3.3L V6's have timing belts.

Keep in mind that the 3.8 liter is a overhead valve design with the cam in the block. The camshaft is closely coupled to the crankshaft by the timing chain and activates the valves via pushrods. Timing chains rarely fail.

I didn't realize that the 3.8 still had a pushrod design. Seems most engines now days have the cams in the heads.

Interestingly, the reason I have a Wrangler is because my 3.7 liter Liberty had a CHAIN tensioner failure (at 125K) and it took out all the valves. I traded it for a Wrangler Unlimited with the good old 3.8, pushrod motor.
