Frame paint recommendations
 

My frame has minor surface rust and I'm looking to see what others are using to prep and paint their frames. I've used basic flat rust oleum paint and it seems to wear away in a years time. I've been thinking of epoxy black spray. What are you using to clean up your frames and protect?

I check my underside regularly and hit any new rust areas with a converter, then just a satin black Rustoleum. None of the treated areas have rusted since (only been through this last winter, though), and they still look good.

Same here. Rust-Oleum V2100 rust reformer followed by black semi-gloss engine paint so it matches the frame color and sheen a little better than matte. Works like a champ. I like to check everything and do touch-up every 3 months or the tow hitch when needed after a trip with the trailer.

Yup after you paint it do what i did and protect it next winter with fluid film. It actually works.

How durable is the engine enamel? Does the rust oleum topcoat hold up? I was looking at black epoxy paint over a rust sealed.

POR15 with an overcoat of rustoleum hammered metallic black... I topped with a thorough spray of Fluid Film. Nearly a year and one very salty winter later and not a sign of rust. The POR15 dries to form a very hard/durable epoxy layer which deprives any rust of air and protects against new rust formation. The rustoleum spray provides UV protection to the sunlight exposed POR15 and then the Fluid Film gets all the nooks and crannies AND prevents road salt from eating anything.

It took some time and elbow grease to do all this but it was certainly worth it - I allowed my first jeep to rust out and never want to have that happen again!

A side note. Frames are really light. Only took a couple of us to walk around with it and one more to guide onto trailer.

I use the rust reform first then the engine enamel over it. Seems to be holding up fine. I'm easy on my jeep; though it made it thru a winter of heavy salt/sand.
