The marking of the drive shaft is an example of best maintenance practice when removing and re-installing the same shaft.
That doesn't mean it has to be done. It just makes sense to re-install it the same way it came out.
It's obvious it can't be done when removing and replacing with a new or different part.

I agree it's "best practice", no questions about it. The point is that it isn't required and I'm yet to see a JK that became out of phase by moving the driveshaft. I've got respect for you (Ron) and the correct way of doing things.
