Default Front and rear differential oils?

I have an 2009 JKU and the owners manual calls for 80w90 GL5 gear oil. I didn’t see anything about using synthetic or additives? I have bought Lucas 80w90 gear oil to use. Will this work without any additives or by not being synthetic? Or what your recommend? Thanks.

You didn't see anything about synthetic or additives? Your 2009 JK owner's manual must be different from the copy I have.

Here is a cut and paste for the rear axle from the 2009 manual:
226 RBI (Model 44) - MOPAR Gear & Axle Lubricant (SAE 80W-90) (API
GL-5) or equivalent. For trailer towing, use MOPAR Synthetic Gear & Axle
Lubricant (SAE 75W-140) or equivalent. Models equipped with Trac-Lok™
require an additive.

If you have limited slip, and you choose to run conventional you need an additive. Most synthetics come with the additive already added. Check with the manufacturer of the oil to see if they recommend the use of an additive for limited slip, if you indeed have limited slip. If it is an open differential or a locker you don't need the additive, but Mopar, and most others recommend a synthetic either way.

Iam not sure if mine is limited slip. I assumed not since it is an “X” model. I don’t do any towing but if synthetic is better I might go with Mobile 1 75w90. Mobile doesn’t have a 80w90. It looks like the Mopar stuff is conventional so that is why I was looking at the Lucas.

Is there away to tell about the limited slip or if it has the Tracloc?

I have no tracklok or limited slip and that Lucas 80w-90 works just fine for highway, crawling, trailer towing, etc. If the synthetic 75-90 is on sale then I get that but u I don'stress as the Lucas line has served me well in the past in this vehicle and others (194k miles on my 2010).

You can check your build sheet to find out if your Jeep came with a limited slip("Trak-Lok")
If you have a limited slip - use additive or synthetic fluid with additive in it already in the rear diff.

Stop overthinking it. Use synthetic and be done with it. There is zero reason not to do this.

I'm with this ^^. I use synthetic regardless, but if you have questions about it, just play it safe and use synthetic or an additive. You're not going to damage a non-LSD diff by using it. Take care of your gears with something decent, and they will take care of you
