Fuel Gauge / Check Engine Light On

Thought I would ask the experts before heading to the stealership.

Fueled up my 09 JKU 2 hours previous. Driving along and my fuel gauge drops to empty. Then the check engine light comes on. The fuel gauge continues to flutter full - empty but the check engine light stays on. I have already ensured my gas cap is on tight. Tried to check the codes using the 3 on 3 off method. The code wont seem to come up. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Are you actually getting the code retrieval method to work - does the readout say "done" after you finish with the key turning?

It doesnt say anything at all from the normal. Doesnt flash, no code, no "done". Making sure the key is pushed in while turning too.

Ok. That means you're not getting the code retrieval procedure to work. Even if it had no codes to report, it would display "done" if you had gotten it to work.

The code retrieval can be a little tricky. Make sure you follow directions PRECISELY - even then, sometimes it takes me several tries to get it to work.

Compliments of Hskr4x4...

Turn key to on position (but don't start)

push the key into the ignition cylinder and while holding it in turn to off and back to on 3 times, ending in the on position

If you did it right, all the dash lights will light up and the odometer will be a series of dashes. After the dashes, it will then display any codes (be ready to write them down since you may have more than one).

Once you have the code, that will help out a ton. It could be so many different things to something little like gas cap not on tight to you name it.

Thanks for saying "it can be tricky". Feel like a moron that I couldnt get something so simple to work . I'll try it again. Thank buddy
