Default fuel usage

I don't know if I'm being paranoid or not but I feel like I use more gas when parked than when driving. I parked my jeep with right at a quarter tank last night, let it settle and ut said I had 120 miles to empty on the dash computer.
Got in her this morning and started up, fuel light cam on and said fifty miles, sat for a second and it went up to 69 and the light went off.

This has happened on a few occasions since I bought it one of which being parked for a couple weeks and when I went back it had "lost" about 1/4th of a tank.

Is anyone else seeing this or am I just going crazy?
Gas cap is tight. I spin it one full turn after the click every time I open it.

Sounds like someone is syphoning your gas at nite.

If I lived at my old place I wouldn't doubt it, but where I am now, its highly unlikely. Not impossible though. But its way too frequent with the police patrol in my neigborhood

Had mine for 13 months & over 24,000 miles driving. I've never noticed the situation you wrote about.

The distance to empty changes according to the mpg you are getting at the moment.
Sitting right after start up, the mpg is not good because you are not moving, and you are burning a richer mixture.

Use the distance to empty during a trip while you have been on the road for a while, and even then, don't count on it.

Regarding the gauge reading less than when you parked, I have noticed mine will do that, too. The rate of change is dampened quite a bit, so when you parked, it may not have caught up to the actual level. When you started the next day, it would read closer to the actual fuel level. It seems to be more noticeable in the lower quarter of the gauge.

I've never seen an automotive fuel gauge that was linear. At best they are only good enough to advise you when to start looking for a gas station.

Default Fuel Gauge error

I experience this situation all of the time. When I take my Jeep out of "hybrid mode" (ie coasting down hill with the key off). I notice that when the key is returned to the ON position the fuel gauge needs a few minutes to decide how much fuel is actually in the tank. Typically, my gauge will initially read low by approx 1/8 of a tank or so and over time will "correct" itself. In addition, when I get down to just over 1/4 tank the fuel light will also come on until it relearns that it really is not almost out of fuel.
I'm a commuter and coast between 100-150 miles per week.

Well like I said initially, probably just my paranoid self. And likely that. Ladt night I did let it settle for a while before looking at the fuel gauge, and this morning it did read empty for a good portion of time (half of my two mile drive) the light was on. By the time I got to work, it was at about 1/8th tank.. after my shift it reaf just a hair over a quarter where I remembered it last night.

So in all, I'm paranoid, I've always thought it was reading odd after a little rest time, but the light coming on this morning had me buying a smoke machine from the snapon guy to check it out. And! I feel stupid. Lol.

P.s. I feel like I'm still getting used to the fuel consumption compared to the Mazda and fairlane, not that I'm mad about it though.

Yes. And after parking, I went back to my jeep about twenty minutes later for something is when I checked the fuel.

Try parking the opposite way on the hill and I'm sure you will get the opposite results. I doubt anyone is stealing your gas, I bet its more of a fluctuating fuel gauge indication because of the hill. Takes a little bit for the computer to catch up.
