I ordered 2 keys online but should have ordered 4 to save on shipping.
Trick is the 2 original keys that came with the vehicle are the only ones that you can use to create more cuts. They are 'masters' whereas duplicates are duplicates only.
You're best to put away your masters cause if one is lost that's the end of being able to make your own.

The keys came in a bag with a number on them. I believe you can get new ones from the dealership if you lose the masters or the masters cease to function.

This is incorrect. The dealer can cut you a new key by the VIN number, but the new key, along with the vehicle and all existing keys, will have to go to the dealer for programing. They will perform the exact same as the original as they are not duplicates cut from an original, they are cut by the key code for your VIN so they are exactly the same as an original key. Not cheap, though. FYI, I work at a dealership, that's how I know.

Never hurts. You might be surprised what you find in there.

That doesn't make any sense. I got 2 extra keys for my Magnum and followed the procedure in the owners manual for programming them. They work fine. Is it different for our Jeeps?

I must be misunderstanding something. I thought the whole point of ordering aftermarket keys and programming them myself was to avoid being raped by dealership prices. I guess I could have avoided saving the money?
My point was that if you lose a master by not putting both away you're setting yourself up to pay the man when you're already down and out!
As long as you've got the two masters you can make an endless number of CHEAP keys.

I bought keys off of eBay and programmed them myself. I also used the copies i made to make more copies. I know it works because i use them all.
One of the two originals is on the Better halfs keys.
Other original stored safely away.
One copy on my motorcycle keyring
One copy on the hook in my closet
One copy using a copy on my keys i use every day.
One copy using a copy at my dad's house on his keys, he borrows the Jeep when my stepmonster is using the car.

I have one full set of all the keys for everything in, on, or around the house in my safe. I have been robbed in the past and had keys stolen. So i am anal about keeping a spare set of everything around.

Glad to hear that cause somewhere along the trail I've heard propaganda that ONLY the 2 original keys are masters-very interesting and what you say does make sense.

Default Spare key from eBay

I got my spare key from eBay, after my dealer asked for $100 to make ONE spare. Search for “Wrangler 2007 Key” I got it from mykeyless (. My local key shop cut it for free; the old lady thought it wouldn’t work.

The programming instructions that came with the key were not exact, but it was easy to figure out. I never heard the “chime” it talks about I just saw the security light witch is just a red dot on the dash buy the tachometer.

You must have 2 “programmed” keys for it to work, don’t need to be “original” but must be programmed. .

X2. I was trying to follow the instructions in the manual, but things didn't work exactly like the manual says (which was confusing at first). However, the reprogrammed key works fine (it's a Rock Key). Maybe they fixed this in the '08 manual?

Default passkey...

all keys from chrylser have some sort of immoblizer or passkey system, dupe keys have to be made at the dealer with a copy of regisration and vin.

wait till you try to add after market remote start..hee hee hee.....

a spare key has to be within 2 feet of the lock cylinder for car to start.

If you really have money to burn im pretty sure you can turn off the immmobilizer with a drbIII scan tool.
