Funky key problem...
a quick question for those with remote keyless entry (RKE)....
for those of you that have programmed duplicate keys on your own via the owner's manual directions, what have you done about programming the RKE system? i was under the impression that the RKE is programmed separately and requires going to the dealership. if not, how did you program your new keys so that the RKE system would recognize them?
thanks in advance!

Being a installer of 12 volts electronics for over 20 years, I can tell you that any Chrysler key with the remote built into the head or any key that has a grey rubber handle as opposed to black has a chip in it. The good news is as long as you have the two existing keys, you can prob=gram your own new keys. Just buy a new chipped key from a locksmith and have him cut it. Then it can be programmed. PM me for programming instructions.
True. I bought 2 spare key blanks from the dealer (@ $45.00 ea), had them cut them and programmed them myself. Took all of thirty seconds. On one of them I used one of the original factory keys and one of the keys I just programmed to create it. Worked fine. Has nothing to do with VIN numbers or anything. Just need any two preprogrammed keys to create a new one. I also went to Lowe's and had them cut me one of thier non-chip blanks for 2 bucks to keep in my wallet...just in case I lock my keys in the Jeep I can at least unlock the door and get in. It's also true that the non-chip key will start the vehicle for about 3 seconds and then the engine will cut out - just like the manual states.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it!
