Heated mirrors?

Heated mirrors?
The snow never melted off my mirrors. It has the little picture on the mirror, so I assume they are heated. Are the heated mirrors supposed to be automatic? Or do I have to turn on the rear defrost or something to make them come on?

When I bought mine I was told it would heat automatically when the mirror adjusting knob is in the middle (12 o'clock) position.
I looked at the salesman like...
