Sounds like a combo of things. Battery sounds good as its newer. Loose or bad connections, starter and maybe alternator... damn.

just took a look at your profile and see you have an automatic:
1. have you taken the battery to local auto parts for a load test - rule out bad battery. 2. can you start it in neutral? 3. Will it start after going from Neutral to Park a few times? there's a cable under the center console that sometimes pops off or gets too loose- if it's not making full contact in Park, it won't start. if you can start it in neutral, the neutral safety switch may be bad. but before you go that route 4. Do you have remote start and have you tried starting it with remote start? 5. Try running a 4ga wire from direct from the Neg post of the battery to the top of the Alternator to get a better ground - I've done this fix on older jeeps, after a while with all the mud, water etc... those wires corrode electrical is always a PIA to figure out - start with the most obvious and work through it from there Good luck! |
Let's review what the OP has already tried:

well i've read all the threads and nothing is working for me , just looking to some insite to avoid the dealer if possible (out of warrante).
Was running fine, went to the store. Got in it to leave and nothing. It clicked but no start. I worked the key a few more times and it started , ran for about 3 seconds , then died. Did that 3 times and now not even that. I replaced the battery with a brand new one just now and still nothing. Wont start in neutral or after moving the shifter (auto) . No codes, beat the starter with a hammer, nothing, just clicks. Tried to run a temp ground wire from neg terminal to engine block and to frame, nothing. Pulled all the started/ign fuses and nothing. WTF! And on top of all that I missed the first half of the JETS game! Help me! puleeezzzzeee |
yea i've done all that. I'm leaning towards the alternator being bad. I'll pull it and have it tested.

:gak:  well, guess I've been working to long today - been at PC all friggen day getting ready for meeting early A.M.- better clean my glasses

My guess is it's the starter. The clicking you hear is the solenoid. That's good and it means the ignition and clutch switches are working. The alternator won't effect starting at all, not with a new battery, and so long as it's properly charged. It sounds like the problem stems from the starter not disengaging from the flywheel and perhaps it's seized.

Do you have an illuminated (or flashing), unlabeled red light next to your temp gauge? If so, that means that your vehicle antitheft system has engaged for some reason and refuses to accept your key as valid. Don't ask me why they don't label that innocuous little light, but when it illuminates, your vehicle will crank and start--and die after two seconds. Sound familiar? Anyway, the corrective action, if it's not the key, is to disconnect the battery for a minute or two, then reconnect. However, if something has happened to your key ... have you tried another key?
|
Honestly, the first thing I would check is the battery. The OP said it was 2 hour old. Obviously it ran fine before that.

I do have that light next to the temp guage blinking when I try to start it and for a few sec after as well. I only have one key but I guess I can take the key to the dealer and have it reprogramed?
All of this happened with the old battery. I then bought a new one and its still doing the same thing. |
