Take the stupid plastic splash shield thing off the front bottom of your JK and toss it in the trash. Then you can get the filter from the bottom, you're down there to drain the oil pan anyway when you do a change. Look in an auto parts store and you can find an oil filter wrench that will fit on a ratchet to give you some leverage to get the old filter off. Put the new one on hand tight. Good luck finding a filter that works for you. Everyone seems to like something different, I use the Motorcraft with no problems, but go with what works on your particular JK.

Due to the vertical position of the oil filter some filters appear to fail and drain out of oil causing the dry starts; the engine clatters and shakes for a few seconds after sitting still overnight upon first startup.

I oil changed and put in the Fram Toughguard TG3614.

I can report that i have had no dry starts. The Toughguard is $6.50 and makes a big deal about retaining the oil in the filter.

HTHelps.

Unplug the coil real quick so you don't have any spark and crank away.

Got my car from the airport after it sat for 5 days.

No dry start, no noise, the oil light didn't come on while it was starting.

Fram FTW!!!!

I read this thread and decided to try a Fram over a mobile 1 filter that has been installed. I have 17,000 miles on my 08 and when the jeep sits for a few hours I get about a 2-3 second lifter rattle. With the same oil I just changed out the filter to see if in fact a filter would make a difference. The noise or dry start went away, the Fram filter made the difference. So much for the Mobil 1 filters.

Thanks for this thread......
