How much gas have you put in the tank?

I did a search and found a ton of stuff on gas mileage and such, but nothing directly related to how much gas is actually in the tank when full. I'm curious to know how much gas everyone gets into their tank at fill up, and more importantly........what is the most you can get in there. I believe the listed volume for the 2door models is 18.5, but has anyone verified the actual volume?

I've had my JK less than 2 weeks and my idiot light has turned on twice after burning 15.5 gallons. So that would theoreticaly leave me with a 3 gallon reserve. I've seen guys claim 3.5-4 gallon reserves, but haven't seen "I put X.X gallons of gas in my tank". So what is the most gas you have put in during a fill up?

It holds 22.5 gallons. Mine comes on when I have about 4 or 5 gallons left. I can go about 80 or 90 miles after the gas light comes on.

yours is a 4 door correct? If I'm not mistaken, they have a larger tank than the 2-door models

Yes it's a 4 door. I wasn't aware they have different tank sizes sorry.

My literature says the 2-door tank is 18.6gal, but I have seen other things that conflict, so who knows. The Unlimited definitely has a larger tank, but again I have seen different amounts (my info says 21.6), but I have seen the 22.5 as well.:dontknow2:

I usually fill-up around a quarter tank, so I don't think I've ever seen more than 15+gal on the fuel dispenser readout.

well.......I tried to answer my own question, but my nerves made me fill up. I was already 24+ miles into the idiot light when I got to work this morning, so I decided to push it a little this afternoon and see how close I could get it to empty. I aimed for a gas station that is about 20 miles from work.

I was 45-46 miles into the idiot light and still only ended up putting 17.3 gallons in. I guess I'll just have to fill my gas can one of these days and run her till she sputters.

Not bad though.......got 334 miles on the tank for an average of 19.3 mpg. This JK keeps surprising me. For this being a "mini-van" motor, I think they did a damn nice job with it.

The tank might be 18.6 on the 2 door, but don't forget there is the fill tube as well.

I wouldn't run it dry. I have read that the fuel pump is submerged and running it dry can damage the fuel pump. I haven't confirmed this info, but it does make sense.

Just and fyi

my 2 door took 17.1 gal when the gas station in Wyo. went out of business and had to try next station in next town 60 miles away
4 dr with 30 miles till empty took 19.4

Gas station pumps have wide variations in accuracy.

I had an old car for years that had a 68 Litre tank (sorry for the metric guys; posting from OZ but I think there's 4.5 litres to the US gallon?) Since I'd run it dry many times as a penniless student, I knew this 68 Litre capacity to be accurate. One time I was close to empty, so I pulled into a major-brand gas station and decided to fill her up as I had money in my pocket for once.

After the pump had claimed it had dipensed 73 litres (5 litres, or over a US gallon, more than the tank could possibly hold even if empty, which it wasn't) I gave up and stopped pumping; the staff appologised & said they'd look into it but insisted I pay the full amount, which I reluctantly did. Anyway, I contacted the regulatory body that oversees gas stations here (ACCC) and made an official complaint, and they did an inspection as they'd recieved a few other complaints; found that more than half their dozen or so pumps were out (always overstating dispensed amounts, and never understating). I know that pumping gas on a really hot day (when the gas is expanded) can result in false readings however this was a cold (for Sydney anyway) winter's night.

So to cut a long story short, there can be a huge difference between induvidual pumps and stations.
