Default how to switch door locks

Hey guys, looking into switch doors with someone but we both want to keep it so our own keys work on the new doors. Is it a lot of work to do this?

Your key is chipped/programmed for your vehicle... I would have to say no, it will not work. I will also say I've never seen a question of this nature on here so, who knows..

I imagine the key chip works at the car's computer, not on the doors. That is, the computer gets the unlock signal and sends a purely mechanical signal to the doors to open up.

So, even though I haven't done this, I'd think you just need to figure out how to get the locks out and trade them as you planned. Sounds like a real PITA though.

yeah I knew we'd have to exchange the lock cores..didn't know if there was an easy way to take the doors apart. I don't care about locking my doors since I never do but future resale owners might care.

I have not had to do it on JEEP doors, it might be easier since they are so easy to take off, but I had to change the Coor, lock actuator and stuff on 2 other vehicles and it was a bit of a pain, took few hours. I would imagine on the jeep it would just be the Key, I think the electronics are actuated centrally. I'm surprised your not getting more answers, i've seen plenty of people trade full for half doors etc, and would have thought that this might have come up before!

You can try calling the dealer service station and just say you are buying a set of half doors used, what's involved with changing the locks so you still only need the manufacturers key. My dealer is pretty cool about answering stuff like that in the hopes I'll let them quote me the work.

I've looked into this for the same reason and its not that big of a deal. Pull the panel and you will see the tumbler assembly. The assembly itself is held in the door with what I would call a slide clip? Pull the clip and disconnect the rod attached to it. Reverse to install...

I was thinking we could both pull our cores off before hand, meet up and swap doors, and then install your cores in the new doors at home

My friend and I did this for a few days. I have a white jku and he has a surf blue jku and the electrical plugs right in and everything with the remote. The ONLY thing that doesn't work is the key into the lock cylinder on the door but other wise its great

That would work. I'm pretty sure driving with the core out will not cause a problem.

FYI the SENTRY system has absolutely nothing to do with the doors. Each key has a number and the vehicles computer remembers the numbers. It's a misnomer when you hear people say "program" a new key. You are actually saving the new key's number into the vehicles computer.

You can "program" that same key in as many vehicles as you want.
