Default I Know Chrysler Engineers Read This - Whats the latest with the new Diesel for the US

OK, so Chrysler now has a few billion bucks and has said there will be a new START / STOP diesel engine for about $28 grand starting price.

OK... Why do I want my diesel to shut off while I'm 4 wheeling? Is there an over-ride so that the engine will keep running if I pause on a ROCK LEDGE and may need to maneuver quickly ???

Will this Jeep run at NORMAL FREEWAY SPEEDS. This includes Arizona where the speed limit is 75mph. (120kph) - If you are not running at that speed 18 wheel trucks will run you down. I cant even do that with 4.10 gears now.

How much BIGGER are you going to make the fuel tank? People who drive diesels want to drive forever on a tank. My Jeep barely makes 275 miles (440km) on a good day. Let alone out 4 wheeling.

In the US, diesel fill-up stations are not as plentiful as Europe or Australia. When I go 4 wheeling there are semi-ghost towns that may have regular (for 5 bucks a gallon) but rarely diesel.

And please, don't give us an inferior Fiat redesign diesel. Please give us a decent diesel with at LEAST 275 hp and 340 lb feet of torque. Thats an EASY baseline for todays diesels.

If you come to market with something like 200hp and 250 lb feet it wont sell, no matter how many chicken lips you put on it.

How about the Intercooler?

How about the Turbo? or even better TURBOS... like 2 of them.

Will it take Urea? Particulate filters that are expensive to replace?

What transmissions are you going to use? Same lame automatics that hunt for a gear every 7 seconds like a bronc ride?

Comments? Please limit this thread to US diesels, we know Canada and everyone else has had them for years, but we need them here.

SO CHRYSLER ENGINEERS AND FIAT DIESEL ENGINEERS: Are you listening to the people who are paying your bills?

They are coming out, I just hope it's not a dog. I am serious about the hp and torque. I wont trade mine in unless there are significant gains.

i would tade in a heartbeat, even for a 200hp diesel, its all in the gearing. Bring it on but i doubt chrysler will do anything, they never do what there customers want, thats why they are in the position they are in. chrysler should close down and sell jeep to someone that cares.

Sergio Marchionne has revealed that Chrysler has $5.7B in cash, up from $4B when it exited bankruptcy in June.

So it has the money to do something great. But I agree, all they do is put latex stripes on chicken lips.

Remember AMC & Renault? History repeats itself, but I do hope they listen.

I know it's a 4 banger, not a V6 - so it's not going to be a smooth critter for sure.

Wouldn't it be nice to have the 3.0 BMW turbo diesel in the 335d in a Jeep ??? 470 lb feet of torque. And great mileage. Thats why I say dont come out with something lame & underpowered.

I agree 100%. Anyone who thinks anything negative about diesel's, really really REALLY owes it to themselves to go take one of those BMW's for a spin. Quiet, fuel effiecient, and enough power to pull stumps and throw you back in the seat. I commute 600 miles a week, so fuel efficiancy is a big deal to me. If I could get a capable diesel Jeep that got decent mileage, I could shitcan my beater car and get down to one vehicle. I would trade in my Jeep tomorrow if something like that was available.

I also agree about the fuel tank. The 18 gallon tank in my 2-door is just absurd. I get better fuel range out of my motorcycle.

I do just over 300 miles per week and can easily make it on one tank...admittedly this is in a healthy mix of city and hwy driving, but the city stuff includes some of the worst stop and go in the mid-atlantic area so I know that brings down my mpg's.

I hear you on the diesel, my only concern is that in my area the diesel stations are really far and few between...I think the closest station is about 8 miles from my home. Also, during the fuel spike a couple years back the diesel almost topped $5 per gallon when regular gas was @ $4. I know none of us bought the JK with great mileage expectations...hell I traded out a Durango with the 4.7 V8 and see only a slight improvement in mpg's. I truthfully would rather see a Hemi sized V8 before I would rather see a diesel just for convenience issues with regards to fueling up...I figure if I want really good mileage it will not happen in anything Jeep!
