So why does one need a locking cap in the first place?

All cars for the past 10 years have an anti-rollover check valve in the line so you cannot syphom gas out of them with a hose. I have tried to put pull fuel this way to lighten a tank before I dropped it with no success.

the old story about sugar in the gas killing your motor is myth.

So why put up wtih the hassle?
Worried about someone stealing the cap itself

I got the cheaper $15 one from the dealer. It comes with a key.I take it off and set on top of the bumper right below the fill spout.I've never even come close to leaving it behind.

Just because you may not be able to siphon gas out of your Jeep doesn’t mean that some jerk doesn’t try to do it (and maybe screw up your filler) - especially when most of the other vehicles in the lot have a locking gas cap and yours doesn’t.

While sugar may not dissolve in your tank and ruin your engine, do you want someone to pour a pound or two into your tank? How about some tree hugger that hates Jeeps and sees your “environment ruining” Jeep in a parking lot, or left alone off a trail, or in a camping site, and have them pour some nasty stuff, dirt, sand, etc. into your tank?

I think it’s pretty cheap insurance for my Jeep. Hopefully it will encourage someone that wants to get at my Jeep to move on to another vehicle that doesn’t have a locking gas cap.

Whether or not sugar in the tank is a myth doesn't matter much to me. There's lots of stuff someone who was intent on doing damage could put in there. Do I think it's likely? Not really. Does it make me feel a bit better? Yeah it really does.

Let me put all your fears to rest.

Easy to use. Take Leatherman, open pliers up, jam under cap and violently pry up. Reach pliers inside of gas cap and twist. Less than 20 seconds.

Oh channel locks take it down to under 15 seconds.

A little determination will overcome a little plastic anytime.

I don’t know about you but I don’t “fear” I’m going to crash, but I do have car insurance - just in case I do or someone else decides to hit me and they don’t have insurance. I also don’t “fear” someone is going to trash my Jeep (I’ve never had any of my vehicles trashed that I know of), but a locking gas cap is cheap one time insurance - to keep honest people honest. Sure someone with tools can get anything open, but someone with only fingers can open a standard Jeep gas cap.

I'm thinking about buying one too off the net. The one I'm looking at, the seller (a dealership) wants my VIN in order to make a key. NEVER give out your VIN to anyone. When I get mine, I know a good locksmith that I will get to key the cylinder for me. Since I live in a warm climate, I ain't too worried about that freezin and breakin crap.

Why should you never give out your VIN? I can walk up to your vehicle tomorrow and copy down the VIN from the plate on the dashboard.

I enjoy the locking gas cap. It works great. And the nice thing is you can go to Lowes and have them make a copy of your ignition key. This key will not start your Jeep (because there is no RF chip inside) but it will work in the gas cap. So, I just keep this spare in my glove box, and leave my ignition key pulled out of the tumbler on the steering column so it doesn't ding like crazy. Its easier this way so I don't have to fumble with all of my keys while unlocking the cap.

At first I thought it would be annoying to have one, but I'm glad I do.
