One idea I saw in another thread was to install a light bar and one of those extensions that Thule and Yakima sell that attach to the hitch receiver. Way less than $1000, mostly if you buy used.

I'll likely go that way on mine. I have a Thule rack rail and basket on my hard top but plan to go soft top in the Summer.

By the way. I am planning to buy a kayak but have no idea of which. Any recommendations of good forums or websites about this topic?

Im going with the Cargo Master Congo Cage and Yakima crossbars, kayak mount for my Hobie Mirage Revolution 11 Kayaks. It will fit soft and hard top.

When I'm not pulling my kayaks in my trailer, I use the foam roof blocks you can pick up at most places that sell kayaks/canoes. Two per kayak (I haul two kayaks on my soft top) so a total of four needed for me. Keeps boats elevated of soft top with no damage. I think all four cost me around 50$.

Do you tie to the tow hooks/rings or the hood bar?

Out of curiosity, what don't you like about the blocks/tue down method?
