Keys and Security
Our 2012 Wrangler Unlimited Sport has two keys (one works and one does not). Went to qualified locksmith and he tried but unsuccessful in making a second key. The dealer was allowed the same try and was also unsuccessful. We need two keys or even three (just in case). Where should we start?
I can't believe the dealer can't get you a key and program the chip.....at the cost of an arm and a leg. I presume that you are not the original owner of the jeep, and that someone might have bought a cheap key as the 2nd key, cut it, and then either didn't or couldn't get the chip programmed, leaving that as a nice ornament on the keychain. Still, dealer should be able to get a key and flash it. Don't be shocked if it costs ~$350 though.

I'm guessing the spare key will unlock the door manually, eg put key in keyhole, turn it and door unlocks. Also put key in ignition and Jeep will start.
Ok if the key won't unlock the door manually you need to find another locksmith as that one doesn't know how to cut a key. If it unlocks but won't start the Jeep then you need to find another dealer who can code that key to your Jeep. Unless of course that spare key is not a fob, in which case it might just be a spare that will open the door if someone locked their keys in the Jeep.
But ok if the first two things work, then the simplest thing is, did you replace the battery in the key fob? I'm guessing when you say it, 'doesn't work' that they key fob part isn't working unless of course you have a base Jeep without power door locks. In which case you are back to my first comments.
If you replaced the battery, check the new one to see if it is in fact good, actually check and see if there is a battery in it..... Also check the battery retainer as these can have problems with making a bad contact and are clean. If the key fob is cracked you can buy fobs online and just swap the plastic case.
Ok if you've already done all this then I'd suspect that the spare does need to be reprogrammed to the Jeep. So you need to find a dealer who can do this.
A good locksmith may not have an original Jeep fob in stock or if they do it could be horrifically expensive but they would also be able to program it to your Jeep but some might not have the computer to do it. Some also sell generic fobs that will only unlock the door manually and then start the Jeep. IMHO for an emergency spare that is good enough vs being stuck out in the middle of nowhere.
Finally you can find fobs online, there is a code/part number on the back of your fobs. It must match the new fob you are buying.
Try buying one of these keys. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Have it cut. If both your keys start the vehicle you can program the extra key.
