Default limited slip ?'s

First off, great site.

Newby here, so hopefully this doesn't sound too dumb. I am seriously looking at getting a JK Unlimited in the new year. From what I have read, the 07 Rubicon has an open rear diff when unlocked, whereas 06 rubi’s had a limited slip (Please correct me if I am wrong on this). Why not have a LS in the 07 Rubi like in 06? Does the LS only help at low speed situations similar to those where you would lock the diffs, or does the LS also help in daily driving type situations at higher speeds.

Aside from riding the trails on the weekend, I am just thinking about daily driving conditions up here in the great white north. Seeing as I would not be driving in 4-low with the lockers on during my commute, I was curious about handling in the rubi as a daily driver with no LS and a Sahara that has the LS. My original thoughts are that with the new traction control features this should not be a problem. I am more curious as to why they don’t have the LS in the new rubicon.

Any thoughts or comments appreciated

Hi geo, welcome to JK-Forum and to be perfectly honest, the only dumb question is the one that isn't asked. Now, regarding the limited slip differentials, neither the 06 or the new 07 has one and to be quite frank, you really don't want one especially when you can have the selectable locker. A limited slip is just that, it helps prevent slipping through the use of clutch packs. With a limited slip, you can still run the risk of sliding on icy roads as it can lock up when you really don't want it and it also has a tendance to not lock up at all when you really do need it. Now, a selectable locker like the Rubies have will completely lock up your axle at the touch of a button giving you maximum traction when you need it and again at the touch of a button, be completely open when you don't. This is really like having your cake and eating it too.

That is, providing you are in 4 Lo, not 4 Hi or 2 Hi. But we're working on a fix for that, right boys?! Once fixed, we will have total control over our universe and all will be well with the world, providing the wind doesn't catch our un-tethered doors, or we don't forget to shake our Jeeps after rain before opening the doors, or don't hit large bumps when cranking our favorite tunes!!!
