Major steering issue
So out of nowhere this morning I am having major steering issues.
I get in my Jeep and go to get coffee and immediately something does not feel right. Normally I have very firm tight ride where I feel every bump in the road. I am not feeling anything. As I get on the main road I notice the steering feels loose and the Jeep is zig zaging. I have to fight to keep it straight and in the turns I now have to hold on with two hands. As Im driving if I rock the steering wheel back and forth there is a huge amount of play before the Jeep actually moves back and forth. I feel like Im riding on a cushion of air and the top of the jeep is disconnected from the bottom if that makes sense. I got underneath and see nothing broken or out of the ordinary. Does anyone know what it might be? Another steering gear going???? |
sounds to me like it might be the box. if you checked every joint in the front end and also checked the pitman arm mount to box and thats tight i would say the box. check the intermediate shaft under hood too. if the u joints on that are worn that will give u floaty steering. hope this helps you.

Jack the front up off the ground and have someone cycle the steering for you, should be able to tell from there.also watch where the steering shaft goes into the box and how it turns in relation to pitman arm movement. Also check those rubber u joints on your steering shaft.

Ugh,I'm on
mobi , I was too slow |
You may also want to check the axle side of the track bar mount as that could also cause steering issues, and the axle side has been prone to failure.

I just looked and see no cracks in the trackbar mount. I even pushed on the trackbar by hand to get it flex a bit and saw no cracks..
My steering also seems a little off could this be the result of a bad shaft/box also? I haven't wheeled it so this came out of nowhere. In fact it has been sitting for the last three days with no driving. |
Ok I had someone move the steering between 10 and 2 with the Jeep running and the only thing I can see is there is a lot of movement at the teraflex trackbar ends. The rubber bushing is moving side to side a lot. Is this normal?

check and see that both intermediate shaft bolts are still installed and check those little universal joints

Both shaft bolts are tight and the joints look fine, although I don't know what I am looking for. |
Ok my friend who is a mechanic came over tonight. First we cycled the steering with the Jeep running. Everything looked good except the Teraflex trackbar. The rubber bushings had a lot of movement in them when moving the wheel between 10 and 2 with the Jeep running.
Pulled the Teraflex and the mounting holes looked fine (not wallowed) and the bushings also looked fine. So we reinstalled the stock bar but the problem did not go away. We checked everything. Shocks all tight, balljoints had no play, my aftermarket tie rod and drag link checked out ok when we cycled the steering, pulled the steering stabilizer and checked it that was ok. So now I am at a loss. The front end feels sloppy and I am getting feedback in the gas pedal. ANY IDEAS?? Also is that normal for the Teraflex trackbar to do, or should I leave the stock one on? |
