Default Modifications and Warranty

I've owned my jeep for about 9 months now and am debating if i should start on mods. Nothing too fancy but i'm concerned with how it will effect my warranty. I was told they just wont cover the parts i added/replaced and also if my mod causes the issue. I'm only looking at a budget boost with tires and dont have much expierence with jeeps and wear and tear. Is it better to wait till a certain mileage or end of warrenty??

Hi Steve, I've often wondered the same thing and have come to one conclusion. It really depends on which dealership you go to. Some are jerks and some are fellow jeepers. Some guys on here pull in with 37's and don't have any problems. Others pull in with a mopar bumper and get shunned. By factory definition, any aftermarket changes made to your jeep WILL void your warranty. But the Magnesson ( I believe that's what its called) act protects us to an extent. They have to be able to prove that the failure was caused directly from the use of the aftermarket part. But.....Chrysler has some deep pockets and quick witted engineers. I recently installed a 2.5 BB to give me a little more clearence and aggressive appearance. I will be installing 35's soon. With all the chatter about the pentastar "Tick" (which I do have a slight tick), I'm worried about this too and I'm curious how many guys with mods have gotten their heads replaced so far with no warranty issues.

Just noticed you are from Canada... I have no idea what the laws up there are but here they can't deny the warranty work unless they prove the mod caused the problem. So if you get a lift and heavy tires and warp your front axle the dealership is unlikely to help you out. But if you get a lift and your window motor goes out they should replace that under warranty.

Like the previous poster said some dealerships are better than others... the site mod here has a horror story about a dealership refusing to fix an exhaust leak b/c of his lift. So even though the law says they should honor the warranty, sometimes getting to do it can be tricky.

edit: @cloddhopper lift shouldn't void your warranty if you get the pentastar tick, but you might have to take it to a friendly dealership. It would be hard for them to make the argument the lift added extra strain on the engine thus void the warranty... unless they also voided the warranty if someone added their own tow hitch and hauled a bunch of heavy stuff around.

Like the previous poster said..the site mod has a horror story and it's a great read...not because of all the crap that he went through, but the information that it has.

When I purchased my Jeep, I went and talked to the service dept. mgr. and asked him about mods...he said that he cant guarantee anything, but I should be ok if the mods dont mess up something im trying to get covered...so it's you're relationship with you're dealership...

Wow Thats an intense story from that other Thread! Thank you for the info! "So your telling me there's a chance?..." lol May need to start bringing the dealer a few more thank you fruit baskets. Seeing as havent paid for my jeep in full yet i may just change tires for the time with no lift. I'll certainly speak to the service dept manager and hopefully build a good repoire.

I've been told that it's not the lift, it's the tires. Your computer is programmed for a certain size, and changes in that size cause the computer to behave differently. Sure, you can get a programmer and fix it, but the dealer won't recognize your programmer as a solution, and any future drivetrain problem can and probably will be attributed to the larger tires.

On the bright side, some dealers are cool and may help you out and not void your warranty.

They won't even cover the Mopar lift under warranty lol. Depends on the dealer like others said.

RIght. You need to ask YOUR dealer. Not HIS, HERS or MINE. My dealer actually purchased and installed my budget boost as part of our purchase agreement. They even purchased back my OEM wheels and tires so I could buy larger aftermarket wheels and tires.
